007 First Light blocks Steam and Xbox preloads to stop leaks ahead of launch

IO Interactive made an unusual call this weekend: 007 First Light will not support preloads on Steam or Xbox ahead of its May 27 launch. PlayStation 5 players still get the option, but PC and Xbox owners are stuck waiting for launch day to even start the download.
The reason, confirmed by IO Interactive, is damage control. The studio cited preventing datamining, leaks, and piracy before the game officially goes live. With a James Bond story to protect, they clearly do not want cutscenes and plot twists showing up on Reddit before launch day.
Context matters here. Several recent big-budget games had story content and cutscenes surface online days before launch, generating spoilers that spread even to people actively avoiding them. IO Interactive is watching that happen and clearly decided the preload window was not worth the tradeoff.
The decision hits hardest for people who preordered the premium edition, which includes 24 hours of early access starting May 26. If your internet connection is slow, that early access window shrinks or disappears entirely while the game downloads. A 50-80GB install on a slower connection can eat up most of a head start. Players who paid extra specifically for that perk are understandably not happy about this.
Community reaction on social media is divided. Xbox and PC players who preordered are annoyed, and fair enough. On the other side, plenty of people are saying they would rather wait a few hours than have the entire game spoiled by leakers before they even get to play it. It is a debate with valid points on both ends.
007: First Light is IO Interactive's first major release after the Hitman trilogy wrapped up, and the studio is treating this launch carefully. The PS5-exclusive preload is an odd but deliberate choice. Whether it actually prevents leaks is another question: preloaded console files can still be accessed by people who know how. But at minimum, it makes things harder on PC where datamining tools are more accessible.
The game releases May 27. If you are on PC or Xbox, keep an eye on your download queue on launch day. And maybe avoid gaming subreddits between now and then.
