Arrowhead Boss Says Helldivers 3 Is Not Coming Soon: 95% of the Studio Is Still on Helldivers 2

Arrowhead Boss Says Helldivers 3 Is Not Coming Soon: 95% of the Studio Is Still on Helldivers 2

Arrowhead Game Studios is not building Helldivers 3, and its chief creative officer wants everyone to stop asking when it is coming. In a chat with Rock Paper Shotgun published today, Johan Pilestedt said there are still no plans for a threequel, and that the only version of a sequel worth making is one so far from Helldivers 2 that both games could live side by side. That is a pretty direct answer from a studio sitting on one of the biggest co-op shooters of the last few years. It is also a quiet reminder that the smartest move in live service right now might be refusing to start over.

    What Pilestedt actually said

According to Pilestedt, 95 percent of Arrowhead is focused on Helldivers 2. A small team is prototyping the studio's next game, but he did not say it will be a Helldivers game, and PlayStation Universe stresses that the prototype may not end up being Helldivers 3 at all. RPS puts the studio's headcount at around 150 people, which is small for a project of this size. Pilestedt added that Arrowhead wants to grow on its own terms and know when to stop, noting that plenty of teams hit big and immediately double their size. Anyone who watched studios balloon after a breakout hit and then lay off half the staff two years later will understand why that sentence landed.

The core argument is about what a sequel does to a community. Pilestedt said that for now his view is that a sequel resets everything and forces players to start over, while a continuation turns the game into a lifelong hobby, like LEGO or Warhammer. He described Helldivers 2 as a third space, a place players can spend huge amounts of time in but also leave for months or years and still find fun and community when they come back. Then he took a swipe at the rest of the industry, saying some studios treat players like a short-term cash grab, while Arrowhead sees players as the actual engine of the game, the ones bringing in friends, making memes and keeping the lights on. When you have an active community doing that, he argued, you do not need a sequel.

Why a sequel is a hard sell

Helldivers 2 launched in February 2024 on PS5 and PC, and it has stayed one of the more popular multiplayer games on Sony's current console. Arrowhead has kept it moving with patches, new weapons, Stratagems and quality of life changes instead of a paid reboot. RPS notes that the Steam live player count was 47,097 at the time of writing, which is not chart topping but looks respectable for a two year old game, and that number does not include console players. You can see the game's current Steam listing and screenshots on its store page, where it still sits as a flagship for the studio.

Pilestedt's sharpest line is the one about competition. He said the biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2, and that a distinct sequel only makes sense if it is so different that both games can exist side by side. That is a rare thing to hear from a publisher-adjacent studio, because the usual playbook is to chase the next number on the box. He also said the industry is panicking because the old live service tricks do not work anymore, and that making Helldivers 2 better every day makes more sense than throwing away its momentum. He did not spell out what he meant by the panic, but RPS reads it as a reference to the string of recent live service cancellations and the layoffs that followed them.

    What the community is saying

Reaction so far is limited. I read a handful of social posts from outlets and fans in several languages, and the framing is mostly the same: do not hold your breath for a sequel, and the studio is staying put on Helldivers 2. Some of the early posts lean on the idea that Arrowhead does not want a new release to fight its own army, which tracks with the quote. Because fewer than three independent fan reactions had surfaced when I looked, there is no honest way to call this a consensus. The announcement was posted by outlets like PlayStation Universe on X, and replies had barely started to arrive.

    The CriticalPixel take

Credit where it is due: this is a refreshing answer. Most studios would spin a sequel tease to juice engagement, and plenty already have, only to cancel the thing a year later and lay people off. Arrowhead is saying the quiet part out loud, which is that a hit live game is worth more as a place players live in than as a product you replace every few years. I also think it is a smart bit of expectation management, because a studio of 150 people with a hit on its hands has everything to lose from overreaching. The risk is obvious too. If Helldivers 2 player counts slide, the same logic that protects the game today becomes the excuse to launch a sequel tomorrow, and Pilestedt even left that door open when he said a threequel could happen if the playerbase fell through the floor.

There is also a creative angle here that is easy to miss. If the next Helldivers has to be so different that both can coexist, the team has to rethink perspective, structure or genre, not just add new maps and a prettier lighting model. That is a high bar, and it could mean the next big Arrowhead project does not carry the Helldivers name at all. For now, the Super Earth faithful should expect more patches, more Warbonds and a studio that wants to keep this war going. A movie adaptation is still in development and PlayStation Universe lists a June 2028 theatrical date, so the brand is not going anywhere, even if a Helldivers 3 is nowhere on the roadmap.
