Blizzard Reveals New StarCraft as an Open World Shooter Directed by Ex-Far Cry Boss Dan Hay for 2030

StarCraft is coming back, and it is nothing like the strategy series that made Blizzard a household name in Korea and everywhere else. At BlizzCon 2026 the developer confirmed a brand new StarCraft game built as a story driven open world shooter, a genre swap so drastic that half the internet spent the following hour arguing about whether it even deserves the name. The kicker is the release window. Blizzard is not shipping this thing until 2030, which means fans get to sit with the announcement for years before they ever touch a controller.

The reveal came through the official StarCraft account, which posted a short and blunt statement that left no room for misreading the pitch. Story Driven Open World Shooter. 2030. That is the entire premise laid out in five words, backed by a cinematic announce trailer titled Dominion that Blizzard uploaded alongside the post.

    What Blizzard actually showed

According to PC Gamer, the announce trailer skipped gameplay entirely and focused on a single unnamed Terran Dominion space marine getting geared up for battle, complete with an inspirational voiceover about killing Zerg. The sequence ends with that marine fighting through a Zerg swarm before cutting to his cracked and bloodied armor being repaired back aboard a Dominion ship. No release date beyond the year 2030 was given, and Blizzard did not commit to a platform list, which tracks given how far out the launch is.

Community accounts tracking the reveal, including OperoGames, described the setting as Terran marines fighting Zerg waves in defense of Arcturus Mengsk's Dominion, placed chronologically before the events of StarCraft 2. That timeline choice is a deliberate move to sidestep the ending of Legacy of the Void, giving Blizzard room to tell new stories without stepping on the trilogy it already closed out a decade ago.

    Dan Hay takes the wheel

The bigger story for a lot of longtime players is who is steering this thing. Multiple accounts covering the show, including Gamers Shack, confirmed that former Far Cry boss Dan Hay is leading development on the new StarCraft. Hay ran Ubisoft's Far Cry franchise for years, shepherding entries built around open world sandboxes stuffed with outposts, wildlife, and escalating villain fights, so the DNA he is bringing to StarCraft is obvious just from the genre choice alone. Putting a Far Cry veteran in charge of a franchise defined by lane discipline and unit composition is either an inspired swing or a total mismatch, and right now nobody outside Blizzard's studio walls knows which.

This also is not the first time Blizzard has tried to turn StarCraft into an action game. StarCraft Ghost spent most of the 2000s in development hell before getting shelved outright, with its protagonist Nova eventually getting demoted to a supporting role in StarCraft 2 and a handful of tie in novels. PC Gamer noted that the new shooter appears to borrow little from that earlier failed attempt, which is probably for the best given how badly Ghost ended.

Fans are split down the middle

Reaction across the platform formerly known as Twitter has been loud and genuinely divided, though with fewer than a handful of independent voices sampled here the consensus should be read as limited rather than definitive. One user summed up the skeptic camp bluntly, writing that if it is not an RTS they do not want it, a sentiment echoed by plenty of strategy diehards who feel like the genre that built StarCraft is being abandoned entirely. Others pushed back on that framing, pointing out that Warcraft itself started as an RTS before evolving into the MMO that became Blizzard's biggest earner, and that a genre shift is not automatically a betrayal of the source material.

There is also a practical worry floating around the discourse. StarCraft has always been a story about an entire galaxy locked in a three way war between Terran, Zerg, and Protoss, and some fans are questioning how an open world shooter built around one soldier squares with that scale. It is a fair question, and Blizzard has not shown enough yet to answer it.

    The CriticalPixel take

Handing StarCraft to the guy who made Far Cry a household name is a bold call, and bold is exactly what this franchise needs after sitting mostly dormant since StarCraft 2 wrapped up in the mid 2010s. But a 2030 release window is an eternity in games, long enough for public excitement to cool off completely before a single frame of gameplay ever gets shown. Blizzard is betting that a strong cinematic and a recognizable director's name can carry the hype for four straight years, and that is a risky bet even for a studio with this much goodwill left in the tank.

The smart move here would be pairing this shooter with actual RTS content down the line rather than treating it as a full replacement, since plenty of the fans grumbling online are not opposed to a shooter existing, they are opposed to it being the only thing on the menu. Until Blizzard shows real gameplay, expect the skepticism to keep outpacing the excitement.

For now, StarCraft fans have a name, a director, a setting, and a year. Everything else, including whether this thing actually plays well, stays a mystery until Blizzard is ready to show it.
