Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5 Arrives October 22 With Edgerunners 2 Content and a Dual-Wield Playstyle Teased

Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5 Arrives October 22 With Edgerunners 2 Content and a Dual-Wield Playstyle Teased

CD Projekt Red just did the thing it told everyone it would not do, or at least something suspiciously close to it. On October 20 the studio announced Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, branded the Edgerunners 2 Update, and set it for Thursday, October 22, 2026. IGN reported the surprise on Tuesday morning, and the announcement arrived with almost no detail, a bare version-number teaser from the official Cyberpunk 2077 account and a promise of more information within a day. The update is free, it lands on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, and a Nintendo Switch 2 release is due to follow shortly. For a game that is close to six years old, that is a lot of noise for a point-five patch.

What CD Projekt Red has actually confirmed

The confirmed part is short. CD Projekt Red's investor relations account said Cyberpunk 2077 will soon receive "new items and features," including content inspired by Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, with Update 2.5 dropping on October 22, 2026. Edgerunners 2 hits Netflix on the same day as the announcement, according to IGN, so the timing is about as subtle as a chrome arm in a metal detector. The official Cyberpunk 2077 account had teased the release earlier that morning with a bare "NEW UPDATE INCOMING" post tagged v.2.5 and a date stamp. Patch notes are scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, alongside a special REDstreams episode, which means the full list of changes goes public a day before anyone can install a byte of it. Everything past that, including how big the Edgerunners content really is, remains unconfirmed.

The REDstream is where the interesting parts will surface. CD Projekt says Wednesday's show, set for 5 PM CEST on Twitch, YouTube and Steam, will take a closer look at the Edgerunners 2 Update and some of the features coming to Cyberpunk 2077. The studio's own announcement names cyberware customization and a new dual-wielding playstyle, followed by a cheerful "and more." Dual-wielding in an action RPG built around loadouts is the kind of addition that can reshuffle how a whole build plays, so that line deserves more attention than the anime tie-in does. Cyberware customization is just as loaded, because chrome is the backbone of every character in the game and any change to how it works ripples through everything. We do not yet know whether these are base game systems or content gated behind the Edgerunners theme, and the studio has not said.

Why this update is a surprise

The surprise comes from the history. In May, CD Projekt insisted it had no plans for further Cyberpunk 2077 DLC or expansions, which disappointed a fanbase that had been asking for meaningful new content for a long time. The studio then announced the Songs of the Past expansion for the 11-year-old The Witcher 3, which made the silence on Cyberpunk look even louder. Cyberpunk 2 is also a long way off, with co-CEO Michal Nowakowski suggesting it will not arrive before 2030. So a feature-heavy 2.5 update with new items, a new playstyle and Edgerunners content is a notable change of tone, even if the studio is careful to call it an update rather than an expansion. IGN's write-up notes that fans are hoping for something substantial, maybe even a new quest made by CD Projekt itself, and that the announcement runs somewhat counter to the May comments.

How the community is taking it

Reaction under the announcement posts is overwhelmingly positive, with one recurring question: how big is it? Replies to the investor relations post range from players saying the game keeps getting better to people already planning a fresh run as their V. A few come with conditions. One user hopes it is bigger than Edgerunners cosmetics, another asks for a proper cosmetic pass because background NPCs wear chrome and clothes that players cannot get, and one PC player used the moment to ask for a fix for random shutdowns mid-session. Paweł Sasko, associate game director on the in-development Cyberpunk 2, posted that he is hyped about what the team cooked, and replies there include a user asking whether it is worth another playthrough before GTA 6 and another asking whether it is not just cosmetics. This is a sample of replies from a self-selected fan audience under two posts, so treat it as enthusiasm, not a verdict.

    The CriticalPixel take

Call it what it is: this walks and talks like DLC, minus the price tag. New items, new features, a new playstyle, anime-inspired content and a Switch 2 version are not a bug-fix list, and CD Projekt Red said in May that no more content was coming. I will not complain about free, especially for a game that has already been through a brutal launch and a long recovery. The timing is also pure marketing, with Edgerunners 2 landing on Netflix the same day the update gets announced, and there is nothing wrong with a studio riding its own anime wave as long as the content holds up. What I will push on is the secrecy. A teaser that reads like a firmware string, followed by a day of silence, is fine for hype, but players deserve to know whether the dual-wielding and cyberware changes apply to everyone or only to Edgerunners-themed content before Thursday arrives.

Here is the schedule to keep in mind. The REDstream and the patch notes both arrive on Wednesday, October 21, the update itself is due on Thursday, October 22 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, and the Switch 2 version follows at a date nobody has given. Until the notes drop, treat any talk of new quests or expansions as speculation. The Cyberpunk 2077 Steam page is the place to watch for the patch once it goes live. If the patch notes confirm real mechanical changes, this could be the strongest reason to reinstall in years. If they reveal a handful of Edgerunners skins and a jacket, expect the mood to turn quickly, because the studio just spent its goodwill on a teaser that promised more.
