Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 Drops October 20 on Netflix With TRIGGER and Kai Ikarashi at the Helm

Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 Drops October 20 on Netflix With TRIGGER and Kai Ikarashi at the Helm

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 just locked a real premiere date. Netflix confirmed the second season lands on October 20, 2026 during the Anime NYC panel on August 20, dropping a brand-new teaser that gives us our best look yet at the next chapter of the standalone Night City saga. CD PROJEKT RED and TRIGGER are back, and the new story is shaping up to be grittier, bloodier, and more unapologetic than the first run.

The new teaser is short on dialogue but heavy on mood. Rain hammers glass towers, drones cut searchlights through smog, and the fresh cast of edgerunners moves like ghosts through the districts that David and Lucy never reached. It is the same neon-soaked visual language that made the original show a hit, but the framing is darker and the camera lingers on the brutality a lot longer than fans are used to.

What we know about the new show

Kai Ikarashi, who worked on the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and SSSS.Gridman, returns as director. Kanno Ichigo, the lead designer behind Promare and the first Edgerunners run, is back in the same role, while Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor continues as showrunner, story writer, and producer. That is the same core team that turned a tie-in anime into a critical darling, and the credits signal TRIGGER is not treating this as a soft reboot.

CD PROJEKT RED and Netflix are explicitly billing Edgerunners 2 as a standalone story with a new cast, so do not expect David Martinez or Lucy to carry the plot. The teaser does not give us character names yet, but it does flash a few faces in the dark, and the music cue, an original score by Tsuneo Imahori paired with Rico Nasty on the track "You Can't Run From Me," tells you exactly what kind of mood the showrunners want. It is restless, paranoid, and a little feral.

    Why this drop matters

For Netflix, anime has become one of the few growth bets still working on the service, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a quiet engine behind the brand. The original series pulled a measurable bump in Cyberpunk 2077 sales and active players, and Phantom Liberty benefited from the goodwill long after the show's final credits. A second season with the same creative leadership is the kind of bet Netflix can actually defend to its shareholders.

For CD PROJEKT RED, the timing could not be better. Cyberpunk 2077 is in the middle of its strongest review window since launch, the Ultimate Edition reissue is still selling on consoles, and a TRIGGER-fronted anime is the cheapest, loudest marketing the studio could ask for. Even with Project Orion and the rest of the Cyberpunk sequel universe still years out, Edgerunners keeps the IP culturally loud.

    Community reaction

Reaction across the anime corner of Twitter was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. Paweł Sasko, the CD PROJEKT RED quest director who spent years shaping the game's most emotional beats, posted a one-line reaction that summed up the studio's mood: "I cannot f'ing wait, my bonbons." Anime trade accounts ran with the date within minutes, and the official Netflix Anime post crossed hundreds of thousands of impressions before the night was over.

The only sour note came from fans who wanted David and Lucy's story to keep going, not a hard pivot to a new cast. That complaint is fair, and the showrunners have made their position clear with the marketing. If you wanted the original crew, you are going to be disappointed. If you wanted TRIGGER to do what TRIGGER does best, ugly violence and gorgeous silhouettes in the same frame, then the teaser is the best preview we have had in years.

    What to watch for next

October 20 is the only date that matters, but the run-up is going to be busy. Expect a proper full trailer closer to launch, a soundtrack drop tied to the Imahori score, and probably a CD PROJEKT RED REDstream or two where the studio teases the connective tissue between the show and the still-active Cyberpunk 2077 modding scene. If the show even partially lands like the first season did, Edgerunners 2 will pull a second wind of attention to the game right when the studio most needs it.

For now, mark October 20, queue up the first season if you have not seen it in a while, and keep an eye on the official Cyberpunk channels. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrives exclusively on Netflix in just under two months, and based on the teaser alone, Night City is about to get a lot more dangerous.
