Discord Nitro now includes Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition with 50 games
By CriticalPixel ·
Microsoft and Discord dropped a partnership today that makes Discord Nitro worth a second look for any gamer who was not fully sold on it. Starting now, Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition is bundled into Discord Nitro as a direct subscription benefit, giving Nitro subscribers access to more than 50 downloadable games on PC and console, 10 hours of cloud gaming per month, and a set of Xbox Rewards perks on top. Xbox confirmed the rollout through the official Xbox Game Pass account, and the Discord Nitro page has updated its headline to read NITRO NOW INCLUDES XBOX GAME PASS at the top. This is not a promotional period or a trial offer. This is now part of the standard Nitro subscription.
What You Get Inside Nitro Now
The Starter Edition of Xbox Game Pass has been folded into the full Nitro tier at no change in price. Discord Nitro runs $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually, the same as before. What changed is that you now get access to a library of over 50 games across PC and console, with titles like Stardew Valley and Fallout 4 confirmed in the official Discord listing. These are downloadable games, not streamed, meaning you install them through the standard Xbox or PC Game Pass app. The 50-game catalog is not the same as Game Pass Ultimate's larger library, but it is a real collection that includes genuine hits and not just padding.
Alongside the game library, the bundle includes 10 hours of cloud gaming per month. Cloud gaming lets you stream Xbox titles without installing them, which matters if you are on a device with limited storage or want to try a game before committing to a full download. The 10-hour cap is restricted compared to the unlimited cloud gaming on Game Pass Ultimate, but it covers a few gaming sessions per month without burning through quickly. You link your Xbox account inside Discord to activate everything, and the benefits stay active for as long as your Nitro subscription continues.
There is also a secondary layer for people who were already on Game Pass before today. Existing Game Pass subscribers who link their account to Discord now receive 250 Discord Orbs each month, a 1.2x multiplier on Orbs earned through Discord Quests, and automatic discounts in the Discord Shop. Orbs are the in-platform currency Discord uses for cosmetics and Quest rewards. If you already run Quests regularly, you will stack extra currency faster with the multiplier active. It makes the partnership feel bidirectional rather than a one-sided bundle in Nitro's favor.
The Version You Are Getting Is Not the Version You Wanted
To be honest about what this is not: Game Pass Starter Edition is the base tier. It does not include EA Play. It does not cover day-one releases from Xbox Game Studios. It does not give you Bethesda or Activision titles that require an Ultimate subscription. The version of Game Pass that convinced people the service was worth subscribing to was Ultimate, and Nitro subscribers are getting Starter. That distinction is meaningful, and the gaming community flagged it immediately when the news broke.
Klobrille, one of the most well-sourced Xbox coverage accounts on X, put it plainly in his announcement tweet: 'I think we all agree this side of this partnership deserves a buff in the future.' Multiple replies to the official Xbox Game Pass announcement asked directly why Nitro does not come with Game Pass Ultimate, or why Ultimate subscribers are not getting Nitro free. Those are the deals that would have landed as genuine wins rather than cautious acknowledgments. Microsoft and Discord have opened the partnership but held back the headline feature.
Why Microsoft Is Running This Anyway
Discord reports roughly 200 million monthly active users, a large portion of whom are gamers. Microsoft placing Game Pass Starter in front of every Nitro subscriber is a distribution play more than a straightforward value-add. If a Nitro subscriber who never considered Game Pass downloads Stardew Valley through the bundle and spends a few hours with it, that person now has a relationship with the Game Pass catalog and interface. Converting even a small slice of those new users into Game Pass Ultimate upgrades is worth far more to Microsoft than the cost of embedding Starter Edition into Nitro.
This fits the broader strategy Microsoft has run with Game Pass throughout 2026. They have been bundling it with hardware, with other subscription services, and now with social infrastructure. The goal is making Game Pass impossible to ignore for anyone who games even casually. Discord is the coordination layer for most multiplayer gaming in the Western market, so appearing on the Nitro subscription page is as close to mandatory visibility as Microsoft can manufacture without purchasing the platform. Whether the conversion rate pays off is a separate question, but the placement is exactly right.
Pricing and How to Activate
The benefit is rolling out today, but Discord notes it is available in select regions and terms apply. Nitro at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year qualifies for the Game Pass bundle. Nitro Basic at $2.99 per month does not include Game Pass. If you have a full Nitro subscription and the option has not appeared yet, this is a staged rollout, and checking back within 24 hours should resolve it. The Discord Nitro page has already updated with the full Game Pass benefit listing and the 10-hour cloud gaming detail.
To activate, open Discord User Settings, navigate to Connections, and link your Microsoft account. Once linked, the Game Pass library and cloud gaming time are accessible through the Xbox or PC Game Pass apps. The 250 Orbs and the Quest multiplier for existing Game Pass members go live through the same connection step. The whole process takes about two minutes if your Microsoft credentials are already at hand, which is about as smooth as cross-platform account linking tends to go.
The CriticalPixel Take
Discord Nitro just became a better deal for anyone who games. If you already pay for Nitro and were not on Game Pass before today, linking your account gives you 50 plus downloadable games and 10 hours of cloud gaming at no additional cost. That is a real upgrade to a subscription that previously justified itself mostly on Discord-native features like animated avatars and file size limits. The complaint that Starter is not Ultimate is accurate and fair, but it does not cancel what was actually added. What is in there is worth activating today.
The more interesting version of this story is what the deal looks like in 12 months. Microsoft and Discord both have incentives to deepen it. If this pilot converts Nitro subscribers into Game Pass Ultimate customers at a rate that pays off, the next iteration of this partnership probably adds Ultimate to the Nitro bundle or adds Nitro to Ultimate. If it underperforms, it disappears quietly. Watching the engagement data on this will tell you something real about how much room Game Pass has left to grow in markets that were already paying for Discord.
