Final Fantasy XIV Evercold Launches February 23 With Early Access February 19 and Two New Jobs, Zephyr and Bastion

Final Fantasy XIV Evercold Launches February 23 With Early Access February 19 and Two New Jobs, Zephyr and Bastion

Square Enix used the Tokyo Fan Festival to put a real date on Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, and it is later than a lot of players hoped. The sixth expansion now launches on February 23, 2027, with early access starting Friday, February 19, and pre-orders opening Wednesday, November 4. According to the official Evercold site, it lands on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac and Steam. Fans had been circling a January window for months, so the slip into late February is the first thing people noticed, and the replies under the news show it. Still, a hard date beats months of vague teasing, and the trailer that came with it gave the community plenty to chew on. Here is everything that was actually confirmed.

The Dates, the Platforms and the Early Access Catch

The schedule is simple. Pre-orders start November 4, and the official page says buying early gets you in-game items immediately and early access on February 19, four days before the general launch on February 23. Deal hunter Wario64 flagged the dates the moment they dropped, and his post pulled in well over a hundred thousand views overnight. Square Enix's own press hub lists the release as 23/02/2027 across Mac, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. One oddity: the same press page still carries a generic blurb about a summer 2027 launch, which looks like leftover copy from an earlier announcement, so treat the February date on the official site as the live one. Early access on a Friday also means one thing for anyone with a day job. The first weekend is going to be a login queue, and anyone who pre-orders should plan around that.

Two New Jobs and a Level Cap of 110

The headline job news is a pair of new classes. Zephyr is a physical ranged DPS built around a crossbow and an avian familiar, with origins traced to the northwestern mountains of Ilsabard. Bastion is a main tank that wields a weapon called Skyltborg. Both are marked as Evolved Mode only, which ties directly into the biggest systems change in the expansion. The level cap rises from 100 to 110, and the story takes the Warrior of Light to the Fourth reflection, a world lost to ice, to face a new threat called the Solstice. Streamer JammerJones also reported that FFXIV has passed 35 million registered accounts, a figure he attributed to the keynote that we could not confirm on the official pages we read, so file it as a secondhand number for now.

Reborn Mode, Evolved Mode and a Reworked Combat System

This is the part veterans will argue about for weeks. Evercold introduces a new battle system with two options. Reborn Mode keeps the current combat system and job mechanics, while Evolved Mode is a new way to play that leans harder on job identity. Players pick the mode that suits them. That is a bold move for a ten year old MMO, because combat feel is the thing a long running community defends hardest. Square Enix is clearly trying to modernize without breaking what people already love, and offering a choice is the safest way to attempt it. Whether the new jobs being locked to Evolved Mode nudges people toward it is a fair question, and the community will be testing exactly how different the two modes feel once they are playable.

Seasons, Fierce Raids and Auto Content Balancing

Beyond combat, the design changes target the modern player who cannot live in the game every night. A framework called Seasons redesigns how rewards are earned and how item level climbs, with Seasonal Adventure Gear for everyday players and Raid Reward Gear for the high end. A new eight player difficulty named Fierce sits between Normal and Savage, alliance raids get split into a first half and a second half to make them easier to approach, and a new duty called the Gauntlet of Power throws up to five dungeon bosses at you in a row. There is also a new Ultimate raid. The main scenario now lets you pick the order of certain areas after a set point, and an auto content balancing system adjusts duties and field enemies to character level so players of different levels can party together. Armoury changes should make juggling several jobs less painful, and character creation gets a new color picker, finer face controls and removable gear components.

Evangelion, Final Fantasy VII and the Crossovers

Evercold also brings two crossover raid series. The first is an alliance raid line called EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire, made with creative input from khara, Inc. The second is Beyond the Lifestream, a raid series built with the team behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. New areas include four Realmships of Water, Fire, Earth and Wind, named Naglfar, Hringhorni, Sessrymnir and Skiðblaðnir, plus new cities Fargarth and Hjartadunur. Pairing Evangelion with a Norse flavored ice world is a wild swing, and it is exactly the kind of spectacle FFXIV does well. Whether the tone holds together is something only the raids themselves will answer.

How the Community Is Taking It

Reaction under the Wario64 post is mixed, though only a handful of replies were readable, so there is no clean consensus to report. One reply joked that early access landing on a Friday is the final boss of calling in sick. Another said early access just means waiting in the login queue first. A third complained that nothing in the reveal excited them yet, and someone else grumbled that the game was supposed to land in January and now becomes another February release. On the flip side, many fans in the wider conversation were thrilled by the trailer. The delay stings, but the feature list is big enough that most of the grumbling reads as impatience rather than anger.

    The CriticalPixel Take

My read is that this is a confident, packed expansion that is finally being honest about its timing. A Friday early access launch, a long list of systems changes and two crossover raid series is a lot to land at once, and a late February date gives Square Enix room to polish. The risk is the combat split. Two modes means two sets of balance, two sets of guides and a real chance that Evolved Mode feels like the true game while Reborn Mode ends up neglected. Square Enix has not shown enough to settle that yet. I would also keep a close eye on pre-order pricing when it posts on November 4, because we have no confirmed numbers for the standard or collector's editions and some early chatter about the collector's box cost is unverified. Do not pay a scalper's price for a digital item before the official store shows its own.

    What to Watch Next

The next marker is November 4, when pre-orders open and the edition prices finally become official. After that, the fan festival media should keep trickling out through the Evercold site, including more footage of Zephyr, Bastion and the Evangelion raid. If you are an existing player, the safe move is to wait for the prices before committing. If you are new, the free trial is the cheapest way to see whether a ten year old MMO is worth starting before Evercold lands on February 23.
