Footage From Xbox's Canceled Perfect Dark Reboot Leaks Out, and It Mostly Shows Off Fruit Physics and Parkour
By CriticalPixel ·
Two minutes of gameplay from Xbox's canceled Perfect Dark reboot have surfaced online, and the part everyone is talking about is the fruit. Per IGN, the clip shows destructible environments, sci-fi weapons, parkour traversal and, in the outlet's words, a team "really pushing next-gen fruit destruction." It is a short, rough portfolio cut, not a trailer, and it is about as close as anyone will get to a game Microsoft pulled the plug on. If you were hoping for a secret leaked build, this is not that, but it is the first real motion we have seen since the 2024 reveal.
Where the Footage Came From
The clip was first reported by MP1st, which says it was obtained during the course of its own reporting and was not handed over by the developer or anyone tied to The Initiative. MP1st describes the source as a VFX artist with credits on several gaming franchises, and IGN says the footage looks lifted from that artist's portfolio. That fits what you see on screen: the cut leans hard on explosions, weapon effects and environmental reactions, which is exactly what a VFX reel wants to show off. Nobody involved with the game has confirmed or commented on it so far, so treat the provenance as reported, not verified. IGN's own tweet on the story had around 18,900 views a few hours after it went up.
What the Clip Actually Shows
According to both outlets, the footage covers developers testing weapons in greybox environments, then moves into fleshed out levels where a character uses parkour to get around and pokes at how the world reacts. MP1st also says it spotted new zones that, as far as it knows, nobody had seen before. That lines up with the pitch Xbox made in June 2024, when the reboot was shown at the Xbox Games Showcase as a first-person secret agent thriller set in a near-future Cairo, with parkour used for both movement and combat and a mix of melee, gunplay, stealth and gadgets. Seeing the weapons and traversal in motion backs up that description better than any trailer cut ever did.
How a Reboot With This Much Support Still Died
The Initiative was founded in 2018 and closed by Microsoft in July 2025 without ever shipping a game, and IGN notes Crystal Dynamics, which was co-developing Perfect Dark, also cut staff after the cancellation. MP1st's earlier reporting said the team had been working on its Vertical Slice 1 since April 2025, which is the playable proof of concept studios use to prove the whole experience hangs together. A rescue almost happened too: Bloomberg reported that Take-Two was interested in financing the game, with MP1st adding that Embracer was in talks as well, but the deal fell through for reasons that were never made clear. IGN also notes id Software had been toying with pitches for a new Perfect Dark before its own layoffs. That is a lot of people circling an IP that Microsoft still would not fund.
The Xbox Reset Is Still Eating Studios
The timing makes the leak sting more. IGN points out that last month Halo was handed to Activision, which will assign a team to the next game in the series, and that Ninja Theory is closing even after showing its new game, Senua, at a recent Xbox showcase. World's Edge and Rare have moved under the Activision umbrella, and Obsidian is now a Bethesda studio working on a new Fallout game. Rare's mysterious Everwild was canceled alongside Perfect Dark. The pattern is hard to miss: Xbox spent years buying studios and announcing ambitious projects, then cut a huge number of them in a single reset and kept the safest brands.
What People Are Saying
Reaction under IGN's post is wistful more than angry, though it is a small sample of replies. One person said the footage makes them appreciate the work The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics put in and that Joanna deserved a shot. Another said they were still gutted it was canceled, and a third said the game looked like it had amazing potential. There was also a joke about nothing protecting a project's reputation like being canceled before the day-one patch, and one reply predicting more cancellations and studio closures. Not everyone was kind to the visuals either, with one reply knocking a character model's jaw. Reaction is limited to those few replies, so do not read it as a consensus.
The CriticalPixel Take
This footage is a rough VFX reel, not proof the game would have been good, and anyone calling it a lost masterpiece is doing the same hindsight trick fans always do with canceled projects. What it does show is a team that had gadgets, parkour and destruction working well enough to cut a flashy clip, which is more than a lot of live projects can say two years after a reveal. Microsoft sold Perfect Dark on a stage in 2024 and shut the studio behind it in 2025, and the only reason we are looking at fruit physics in 2026 is that a contractor's portfolio leaked. That is a lazy way for a flagship reboot to end. If Xbox wants anyone to believe its next reset, it can start by telling us whether Joanna Dark has a future somewhere in the lineup.
MP1st raised the same question, wondering whether Xbox CEO Asha Sharma might give the IP another chance with a different first-party studio. Nothing from Microsoft suggests that is happening, and for now this clip stays what it looks like: a two minute reminder of a game that got far enough to have a vertical slice and still never got a release date.
