Guild Wars 2 Makes Living World Season 2 Free and Bundles Seasons 3 to 5 With Expansions, With Gem Refunds

Guild Wars 2 Makes Living World Season 2 Free and Bundles Seasons 3 to 5 With Expansions, With Gem Refunds

ArenaNet just did something MMO publishers rarely do: it made its own story cheaper to reach. On October 13, the Guild Wars 2 team announced that Living World Season 2 is now free for every player with a level 80 character, and that seasons 3, 4 and 5 now ship inside the expansions they sit next to. Living World seasons are no longer sold on their own at all. If you bought any Living World content after September 12, 2026, the gems come back automatically. After fourteen years of selling the connective tissue of its plot as separate add-ons, the studio is finally admitting the old structure was a speed bump.

    What Actually Changed

Season 1 was already free, and season 2 now joins it. Anyone with a level 80 character gets Season 2 just by logging in, which lets you play straight from the end of the core story to the point where Heart of Thorns picks up. Seasons 3 and 4 are now included in the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle, and Season 5, The Icebrood Saga, comes with End of Dragons. If you already own those expansions, any missing episodes unlock on their own. ArenaNet's reasoning is simple: the seasons are either included for everybody or included with an expansion, so there is nothing left to sell separately.

The bundle lineup was rebuilt around that logic. The updated Elder Dragon Saga bundle holds Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire and End of Dragons together with Living World seasons 3, 4 and 5. A new Astral Ward Saga bundle collects Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds and the latest expansion, Visions of Eternity. The Complete Collection covers all six expansions plus seasons 3 to 5, and ArenaNet says it unlocks every piece of paid content from the 14 years the game has been running. Each bundle carries the character slots and shared inventory slots of its expansions, but they do not stack if you already own one of them. Steam players get dynamic bundle pricing that discounts what you already own, and the announcement does not list prices, so I am not going to guess at numbers.

The Starter Pack got a quiet upgrade at the same price too. It now includes a Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic, 5 Teleport to Friend devices and 2 Black Lion Chest Keys, and people who already bought it get the extras by in-game mail. ArenaNet says anyone who has not received the items or the gem refund by October 15 should contact support.

    Why This Was Overdue

The old model was a trap for newcomers. Expansions carried the big beats, Living World seasons filled the gaps between them, and the seasons were sold separately. Eurogamer points out the obvious cost: players who only bought expansions missed what key characters were up to, and major developments went largely unexplained. Charging extra for the plot between the plots was always a strange hill to defend in a genre that lives or dies on getting new people through the door.

The timing is not an accident. Eurogamer notes that Guild Wars 3 has been announced with a beta planned for autumn 2027, and that Guild Wars 2 is getting a Hall of Monuments system that lets players unlock Guild Wars 3 rewards by finishing tasks in the older game. The original Guild Wars has also been rebooted as Guild Wars Reforged. Tidying the storefront before a wave of curious newcomers arrives is the kind of boring housekeeping that actually pays off, and it is my read that this is the point of the whole exercise.

    The Fine Print Worth Reading

Free is carrying a lot of weight here. Only seasons 1 and 2 are free for everyone, while seasons 3 to 5 still require the matching expansions, which remain on sale individually. Whether this feels like a discount depends on what those expansions cost you against what the seasons used to cost, and the announcement gives no figures. One viral post on X, which had 768 likes when I read it, led with the line that all Living World seasons were given away for free, even though its own list breaks the bundling down correctly. Eurogamer's write-up also places season 1 with the base game and season 2 with Heart of Thorns, which differs from ArenaNet's own post saying season 2 is free for everyone with a level 80 character. When outlets disagree, the studio's announcement wins, and this article follows it.

    Community Reaction

The reaction I could find is limited and leans positive. The one post with real traction treated the change as a freebie win, and the rest of what turned up on X was mostly recaps of the announcement rather than opinion. With fewer than three independent reactions of any size, I am not going to pretend there is a consensus. Veteran players who already own everything get nothing new out of this, and the ones who paid for seasons before September 12 get gems back instead of cash, which keeps the money inside ArenaNet's store.

    The CriticalPixel Take

Good move, late move. The refund window tells the story: ArenaNet was still selling these seasons as separate products as recently as mid September, and now there is an automatic refund process for the people who paid. That is the cleanest way to handle it, and a fairer outcome than quietly changing the store and leaving recent buyers to file tickets. Giving the refund in gems is a small complaint, and nobody had to ask for it, which counts for something in a live-service business.

If you bounced off Guild Wars 2 because its story felt scattered across a storefront, this is the cleanest on-ramp the game has had. Log in on a level 80 character, play Season 2 for nothing, and decide whether Heart of Thorns earns your money. I would have liked prices in the announcement. Until they show up, the real test is whether lapsed players actually come back before Guild Wars 3 starts pulling attention elsewhere.
