Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited 12 Days After the RuneFest Reveal and Offers a Free Trial Instead

Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited 12 Days After the RuneFest Reveal and Offers a Free Trial Instead

Jagex needed less than two weeks to bury its own headline announcement. RuneScape Reignited, the permanent fresh start character type unveiled at RuneFest on October 3, was cancelled on October 15 by creative director Mod Ryan in a video and a blog post. IGN reported the news with the line that sums it up: it is clear that Jagex missed the mark and is not moving forward. The studio's stated reason is plain, which is that existing players pushed back hard and Jagex decided to listen. That is the right call on paper, but twelve days from stage reveal to funeral is a rough look for any studio.

What Reignited Was Supposed to Be

According to the announcement post Jagex published after RuneFest, Reignited was a new permanent character type that would run in the same worlds as veteran characters while using a brand new economy and brand new records. No paid progression was on the table, and every Reignited character would have gotten free access to members content for its first 10 days. There was also a Hall of Legends, where big achievements would be immortalized with a permanent statue of your character. Jagex pitched the whole thing as a way to experience 25 years of RuneScape from a shared starting line, almost as if the game launched today. IGN compared the concept to the clean slate approach of WoW Forever, and the launch was set for December 2 alongside the Adventure Guide. Before the cancellation, Jagex had already stuck a notice on that announcement page saying it was reevaluating Reignited, which tells you how fast the heat arrived.

    Why the Veterans Revolted

IGN says a vocal part of the playerbase argued that Reignited would fracture the community, and that the devs should spend their time on ongoing updates instead. Mod Ryan's own words tie it to history: the last time Jagex did not listen to player feedback, combat changed forever, and he says it took more than a decade to recover. He also reminded everyone that he said on stage that Jagex would not repeat the mistakes of the past. Notice what that means. The studio spent 2026 stripping out Daily Challenges, Auras and microtransaction items to win trust back, and then announced a parallel character class that a chunk of that same audience read as a second game bolted onto the first. You cannot spend a year rebuilding trust and then pitch a split without asking the people who stayed.

    What Jagex Is Offering Instead

The replacement plan is simpler. On December 2, Jagex still ships the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, and it opens a free 10 day trial that runs through December 12. New characters qualify, and so does anyone who has not been a member since June 2, and the trial covers RuneScape members worlds only, not Old School. Plugins are still due on Monday, October 19, with more details promised early next week. The 2027 roadmap stays intact too, with a return to a proper grandmaster quest, an Agility rework and more Road to Restoration changes. Mod Ryan says the Reignited argument overshadowed what he considers one of the best roadmap reveals he can remember, and the pitch for returning players is now no separate worlds, just everyone in the same game.

    How the Community Took It

Reaction is not one note, but the pattern is clear. IGN points to top posts on the game's subreddit that are celebrating the decision, with one player saying it goes a long way toward rebuilding trust, and another saying fans want new people to join this game, not a parallel copy of it. On X, the mood is more split. One player argued Reignited could have worked with a firm integration deadline, the way Jagex handled an earlier merge, because keeping new and veteran players apart with no end date was a miss. Another, who mains RuneScape and not Old School, says they were hit with slurs and told to kill themselves for liking the idea. A third says they got abused over a simple opinion about Reignited. That last part matters, because it means the fight itself got ugly on both sides of the argument, and a studio reading the room only through the loudest replies is going to misjudge it.

    The CriticalPixel Take

Credit where it is due: Jagex listened fast, and for a studio that spent a decade living down combat changes, quick reversals beat stubborn ones. The issue is the order of operations. A feature that splits your community, changes how your economy works and tries to replace the on ramp for new players should be stress tested with the people who fund the game before it gets a stage reveal and a launch date. Instead, Jagex announced it, got burned, put up a reevaluation notice and killed it within twelve days, which makes the RuneFest keynote look rushed and the planning look careless.

There is also a real tension nobody has solved. RuneScape needs fresh blood, and IGN notes that the player base is small and does not grow much, which is the exact problem Reignited tried to attack. A free trial and a smoother Adventure Guide are fine band aids, but they do not give returning players the clean slate that made the idea tempting in the first place. RuneScape 4 was also announced at RuneFest as a next generation version built on Unreal Engine, with no release date, so the long term answer to growth may sit there instead. For now, the short term test is December 2, when Jagex finds out whether a 10 day trial and no separate worlds is enough to bring people back without upsetting the ones who never left.

Plugins land on Monday, so the next few days will show whether Jagex has settled the community or just paused the argument. If you play RuneScape, the one thing worth doing is keeping an eye on the December 2 update notes, because that is where the replacement plan either earns its keep or gets quietly rewritten again.
