Jennifer English Leaves Tides of Annihilation, and Eclipse Glow Has Already Recast Gwendolyn
By CriticalPixel ·
English actress Jennifer English is stepping down from the lead role in Eclipse Glow Games' upcoming dark fantasy action-RPG Tides of Annihilation, citing personal health reasons. The studio confirmed the change late on July 17, and English followed with her own statement on July 18. She had been set to voice Gwendolyn, the game's protagonist, an Arthurian-inspired warrior fighting through a haunted modern London to save her family from a supernatural invasion. The role is being recast, and English will stay on in an advisory capacity rather than disappear from the project.
The Studio Statement
Eclipse Glow Games confirmed the swap in a statement from the official Tides of Annihilation X account. The studio thanked English directly and made clear that her health was the priority. Jennifer informed us that she would no longer be able to continue in the role, the studio wrote. While we were, of course, saddened by her decision, we completely understood and respected Jennifer in prioritizing her well-being. The team went out of its way to thank English for staying involved during the transition, including helping identify and connect with candidates who could carry the character forward.
English Speaks
English released her own statement later the same day. Recently, I have found myself needing to slow down and reassess the commitments I have taken on, she wrote. After careful thought, I have realized I need to take time to reset and properly look after my mental and physical health. She framed the decision as difficult, yet personally necessary, and confirmed she is stepping away as the project moves into its next phase. There was no indication that the departure was tied to creative differences, studio turmoil, or any external pressure from Eclipse Glow Games.
Players will recognize English from two of the most celebrated RPG performances of recent years: Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3 and Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Both roles made her a fixture of the best voice performance discourse on social media, and Tides of Annihilation was widely expected to be her next marquee turn in the genre. Eclipse Glow Games had positioned the Gwendolyn reveal as a flagship moment for the game, alongside the playable Gamescom demo set for Hall 6, B-050 in Cologne this August.
The Recast
Eclipse Glow Games has already found a replacement. Her recent work in video games left a strong impression on both Jennifer and our team, the studio wrote, not only for the performance itself, but for the remarkable care and dedication she showed in understanding the character. The new performer is currently recording Gwendolyn's English lines, and her first appearance will be in the playable Gamescom 2026 demo this August. Studio updates over the same period will feature the new voice in select official channels.
English will stay on as an advisor rather than vanishing entirely. Jennifer remained incredibly supportive and, together with other members of our voice cast, helped us identify and connect with talented performers who could carry Gwendolyn forward while staying true to the character, the studio said. The handoff is unusually clean. The new actress has both English's endorsement and a working relationship with the rest of the cast. Most studios do not get that kind of cooperative handover when a lead departs mid-production.
Community Reaction
The reaction across social media has been loud and sharply divided. Fans of English have rallied behind her in large numbers, with replies under the official post carrying tens of thousands of likes and supportive messages calling out her right to step back without scrutiny. Others have expressed disappointment at losing one of the most recognizable voices attached to the project, especially given that Tides of Annihilation had been pegged as a major 2027 release.
Some corners of the response have been uglier. A vocal minority has dragged the announcement into personal attacks and conspiracy theories, with several replies pushing transphobic smears about English herself. The studio statement, English's own words, and the clean advisory handover all point to a straight health decision, and reading anything else into it is bad faith. The bigger story is the one Eclipse Glow Games actually told.
Critical Pixel Take
A lead voice actor walking away from a marquee role this late in production is normally a death knell. Eclipse Glow Games deserves credit for handling it the way it did: a clear statement, a real handover with English still involved, and a replacement already in the booth. The Gamescom demo in August is now an audition for the new Gwendolyn as much as a gameplay showcase. If she lands, Tides of Annihilation keeps its momentum. If she does not, the studio has bigger problems than the one it just resolved.
It is also worth saying the quiet part out loud. Nobody should have to drag themselves through a flagship performance for a game publisher at the cost of their health. English is one of the most acclaimed performers working in RPGs right now, and she is using the platform she has built to set a boundary. The industry that so often talks about crunch and burnout should probably pay attention when one of its stars says the workload is too much, instead of treating it as a marketing problem to be solved with a quiet announcement.
Tides of Annihilation is still set for a hands-on showing at Gamescom 2026 in Hall 6, B-050. Players who try the demo will hear the new Gwendolyn for the first time. Whether that voice becomes the standard for the character or a footnote depends entirely on what the studio has lined up for August.
