Kingdom Hearts IV Finally Coming to Switch 2 as Square Enix Ditches Cloud Versions
By CriticalPixel ·
Square Enix just ended years of pain for Nintendo fans. Kingdom Hearts IV is officially coming to Switch 2, and unlike every previous Kingdom Hearts release on Nintendo hardware, these will be native versions rather than the dreaded cloud streaming ports that plagued the Switch era. The announcement came during today's June 2026 Nintendo Direct alongside a new trailer confirming the game launches for Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The Collection That Should Have Happened Years Ago
The bigger surprise might be Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III], an all-in-one bundle that drops October 8, 2026. This includes KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC), all running natively on current-gen hardware. Pre-orders are open right now across all platforms with platform-exclusive keyblades for early buyers. Switch 2 owners get the Long Night keyblade, PS5 gets Midnight Blue, and Xbox gets Phantom Green.
Free Demo Available Today
Square Enix is not making you wait. A free demo for Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind is available on Switch 2 starting today. It includes two parts: the opening through early Olympus (save data carries over to the full game) and a slice of Toy Box World (save data does not carry over). Players who owned the cloud versions on Switch or digital versions on PS4 and Xbox One are eligible for a 50% discount on the new native versions. The Switch cloud versions have officially been discontinued as of today.
Kingdom Hearts IV Remains a Mystery
The Kingdom Hearts IV trailer showed very little beyond confirming the Switch 2 port. The game follows Sora in the mysterious city of Quadratum and promises new worlds, new characters, and new powers. Square Enix says more details are coming in the future. The series is approaching its 25th anniversary in 2027, so expect a major blowout closer to that milestone. For now, the fact that Nintendo fans are getting the same version as everyone else instead of a compromised cloud port is the real headline.
A Long Overdue Correction
Kingdom Hearts on Switch was one of the most frustrating chapters in the cloud gaming era. Square Enix released cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts III and the HD collections on the original Switch, and they were barely playable for anyone with anything less than perfect internet. The fact that Switch 2 is getting native ports signals that Square Enix sees real potential in the hardware. Combined with the Ocarina of Time remake, the Direct gave Switch 2 owners two of the biggest reasons to upgrade that Nintendo could have offered.
