Modern Warfare 4 Beta Hits August 21 With Two Weekends, Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Open August 26
By CriticalPixel ·
Activision finally put a real calendar on Modern Warfare 4. After months of drip-feed teases, the publisher laid out a tight two-month runway from the Call of Duty NEXT showcase on August 21 to the full launch on October 23, and the most interesting line in the entire schedule is sitting quietly on August 28: that is when Nintendo Switch 2 owners get to drop into the open beta. The reveal came straight from the official Call of Duty account, with CharlieIntel and GameSpot both confirming the same minute-by-minute breakdown within minutes of each other.
Two beta weekends, not one
Forget the old single-weekend Call of Duty beta. MW4 is split into two distinct windows, and Activision is using them to gate pre-orders hard. Beta Weekend 1 runs August 21 through August 25 and is locked behind a digital or physical pre-order on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC. There is no early access path for Game Pass subscribers this time, which is a notable change from how Microsoft has been handling first-party launches lately. Beta Weekend 2 opens the door to everyone from August 28 through September 1, and this is the window where Nintendo Switch 2 players get to play for the first time without buying anything upfront.
The early-access paywall will rub some people the wrong way, but the choice is pretty transparent. Activision wants pre-orders banked before the open weekend pulls curious players in, and giving Game Pass nothing extra removes a Microsoft-shaped lever from its launch math. Either way, anyone who has been sitting on a Switch 2 since launch finally has a flagship reason to dock the thing in a few weeks.
Call of Duty NEXT goes global
On August 21, the Call of Duty NEXT showcase streams live from creator setups around the world, and the first beta weekend kicks off the moment the broadcast ends. That is the moment Activision has been teasing for months, with three creators, three play sessions, and the reveal of the new map Kill Block for the early beta. The official account described it as the biggest Call of Duty NEXT lineup yet, and the production style leans hard into the streamer-ecosystem push that has defined the franchise's marketing since Warzone took off.
If you are a multiplayer-only fan, the beta is your only real look at MW4 before launch. The campaign stays gated until October 16, when pre-order customers get a 7-day early-access window before the full release on October 23. There is no single-player demo planned for the open weekends, which is the same playbook Activision has used since the original Modern Warfare reboot in 2019.
Nintendo Switch 2 finally gets its Call of Duty moment
Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version open on August 26, two days before the open beta begins. That timing is not accidental. Activision is giving the Switch 2 crowd just enough runway to download the game, sign in, and be live the second Weekend 2 starts. The official account confirmed Switch 2 owners can join the open beta without pre-ordering, which matters because every previous major Switch 2 port has shipped behind a paid early-access wall of some kind. Letting the whole player base jump in for free is a confidence vote in the Switch 2 user base, and it is also the cheapest possible way to drive Switch 2 pre-orders right before the holiday window.
Performance is the obvious question nobody can answer yet. Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform has not been a real thing since the Wii U era, and Modern Warfare 4 is the most demanding Call of Duty in the franchise. The fact that the open beta is the first public stress test suggests Activision is using the Switch 2 install base as a free QA pass before launch. If it holds 60fps in handheld mode, the Switch 2 finally has its killer online app. If it does not, the refund window opens before the game even goes on sale.
Pre-order carrot: Moonlit Pearl and a serialized weapon camo
Pre-ordering MW4 before launch unlocks the Moonlit Pearl Universal Weapon Camo in Black Ops 7 and Warzone immediately, plus a chase reward called Gilded Ruin that is capped at the first 100,000 players. Anyone in that first batch also gets a uniquely serialized version of the camo, which is the same scarcity gimmick Activision has leaned into with the Last Stand and Crimson Bloom camos in past seasons. For Warzone and Black Ops 7 players, this is the first time a future title has been used as a pre-order unlock for the current live service, and it is a clever way to keep the in-game store active during the long pre-launch stretch.
What it means for the rest of the year
October 23 is going to be one of the loudest single days in gaming all year. Modern Warfare 4, the already-launched Crimson Desert deal cycle on PS5 at $49, and the looming GTA 6 release are now sitting less than a month apart. Activision is claiming the entire pre-holiday marketing window with a beta that starts in late August, and Nintendo Switch 2 finally has a marquee live-service game to point at when Sony and Microsoft ask why the platform matters. None of this fixes the franchise's design fatigue problems or the endless battle-pass treadmill, but it is a real, dated roadmap, and for the first time in years Call of Duty fans can plan their fall around it. Mark August 21, mark October 23, and start clearing the SSD.
