Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta Goes Free This Weekend as Infinity Ward Overhauls TTK, Aim Assist and Spawns

Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta Goes Free This Weekend as Infinity Ward Overhauls TTK, Aim Assist and Spawns

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is now live for anyone with a console or a gaming PC. Infinity Ward flipped the switch on the free Open Beta at 10 AM Pacific on Friday, August 28, and the gate stays open until 10 AM Pacific on Tuesday, September 1. No pre-order, no Beta code, no Club Call of Duty loyalty pledge. Just download the client, hit play, and you are dropping into Multiplayer, the campaign mission Entrenched, and the new Zodiac map in Call of Duty: Warzone Resurgence. Cross-progression is on, cross-play is on, and your Weekend One operator unlocks come with you.

Weekend Two is not just a wider door to the same Beta. The Infinity Ward team rebuilt core combat loops based on what Weekend One players screamed about. Every single weapon got retuned to push time-to-kill back toward a more durable mid-range gunfight, instead of editing base health and turning every engagement into a coin flip. Tactical Sprint is gone by default and now lives behind a Perk, which single-handedly slows the pace and gives players more breathing room in close quarters. Aim assist has been dialed down across both Multiplayer and Warzone with full transparency from the studio that the new values are not where they want them yet. Killstreaks cost one extra kill to call in, the announcer bug that doubled up killstreak callouts is fixed, the Artillery Strike radius got smaller, and Hardpoint spawns were partially reworked with a new logic that aims to be predictable instead of chaotic. Spawning on top of a squadmate finally feels less random, and Battle Hardened now drops into the temporary spawn protection to cut down on flashbang spam right after respawn.

The New Toys and the Old Ones Reimagined

On the content side the Open Beta drops a fresh 6v6 map called Lithium, two new Ground War maps under the Combat Outpost banner, the new Hijack mode, and the brand-new Kill Block arena mode that Infinity Ward has been teasing since Call of Duty: NEXT back in August. Gunfight is back in the rotation. Drop into Warzone Resurgence and you are playing on Zodiac, a Korean-peninsula-flavored map built around verticality and rapid rotations, complete with cross-progression and cross-play across every platform in the Beta. Mobility Course is also in if you want to grind weapon XP without jumping into a live match, and Create-a-Class now exposes the full Loadout system so you can actually feel how the new Perk economy plays in real gunfights.

The Biggest News is on Switch 2

This is also the first time in franchise history that a Call of Duty Open Beta has run on a Nintendo platform. Modern Warfare 4 ships natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, the same day as the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Battle.net launch. Every Switch 2 owner can pre-load the Beta right now through the Nintendo eShop and join the Weekend Two action without a pre-order or Beta code. Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, HDR, and handheld play are all in, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is supported, and the Vault Edition cosmetic content drops free for everyone during the Beta window. If you bought a Switch 2 for Mario Kart World and wondered whether the thing would ever pull double duty on shooters, here is your answer, and it runs alongside every other platform through full cross-play.

    RICOCHET and the Cheat Cartel

Activision also used the Beta window to remind everyone that RICOCHET Anti-Cheat does not clock out when the match ends. The team published fresh numbers on August 28: 375 disrupted cheat-reseller operations, 80-plus cease-and-desist letters, and 30-plus vendor shutdowns, with a public Ohio takedown of the cheat vendor Elocarry last weekend. Cheat makers operate across borders, and so does the RICOCHET crew, and litigation is on the table when the cease-and-desist path fails. It is the kind of enforcement work CoD fans have begged for since the Warzone launch era, and it lands at the right moment to keep the public Beta clean while it is most exposed. Anyone who has ever lost a Warzone match to a flick-aiming headshot from across the map knows how much that matters.

    Community Reaction

The community response has been loud, mostly in a good way. Charlie Intel's Friday recap pulled 122 million views on the Open Beta going live, and their thread on the new movement and aim-assist values cleared 442 million views and 9 million likes within hours. The pattern is what you would expect from a CoD launch window: long-time fans love that Infinity Ward finally listened on Tactical Sprint and killstreak spam, controller players are split on the aim assist dial-back, and Warzone-only players want SBMM and disbanding lobbies next on the chopping block. Console players on Reddit are already swapping clips of Kill Block rounds going sideways, the Switch 2 community is melting down in a good way over handheld Multiplayer running at what looks like a locked 60, and creators who flew out to Korea for the pre-launch hands-on are posting montage after montage of Zodiac rotations.

    The CriticalPixel Take

Modern Warfare 4 is the first CoD in years that does not feel like it was shipped straight from a marketing slide into a void. Infinity Ward used Weekend One as an actual Beta and rebuilt combat around the feedback instead of promising fixes in a Season 1 patch six months after launch. Tactical Sprint becoming a Perk instead of a default is a real concession, not a marketing carve-out. Bumping every killstreak cost by one is a small number with a huge effect on match flow. Aim assist being dialled down is going to ruffle feathers, but it had been running hot since Modern Warfare II, and dialing it in across the next two months is a reasonable promise. The biggest swing is the Switch 2 version. CoD on a Nintendo platform has not really worked since the Wii U Black Ops II port, and shipping a full-fat Modern Warfare 4 build with cross-play, gyro, and mouse controls is a statement. If the launch holds 60fps in handheld and the anti-cheat story stays loud, this Beta will look like the moment Activision figured out how to run a CoD launch in 2026.

    Bottom Line

The free Open Beta is open right now through 10 AM Pacific on Tuesday, September 1. Download it on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, Battle.net, or the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2. If you bounced off the franchise during the Tactical Sprint era, this is the cleanest re-entry point in half a decade. If you are a Switch 2 owner wondering if the console can actually do shooters, the Beta is your answer and it is free. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23. Set a reminder, drop into the Beta, and tell us which Perk you want to see next in the loadout slot Tactical Sprint just freed up.
