Netflix and Sega Confirm Crazy Taxi Movie, New Sonic Series and Stranger Than Heaven Film

Sega just handed Netflix the keys to three different eras of its catalog in one shot. The streamer and the Japanese publisher confirmed a live action Crazy Taxi movie, a new animated Sonic series aimed at younger viewers, and a film adaptation of the yet unreleased Stranger Than Heaven, the crime drama from Like a Dragon developer RGG Studio. It is the kind of multi title deal that used to be rare for gaming adaptations and now feels almost routine for Netflix, which has spent the last few years turning big chunks of Sega's back catalog into both prestige and kids programming at the same time.

Three Sega Classics, One Netflix Deal

The centerpiece is Crazy Taxi, the arcade classic that debuted in 1999 and built its identity on reckless driving, punk rock energy, and a stopwatch that never let up. According to Variety, the movie will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the duo behind the 2025 Naked Gun reboot, with Original Film producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher attached alongside Sega's Toru Nakahara. The timing lines up with Crazy Taxi: World Tour, the newest entry in the series, which is scheduled to launch in 2027 and already has a Steam store page live for wishlisting.

Sonic is getting yet another show, but this one is aimed squarely at a younger crowd than Sonic Prime ever was. The new animated series is being developed with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, and Sega is pitching it as a comedic, high energy take built for kids who want a little attitude with their hedgehog. It joins a lineup that already includes three seasons of Sonic Prime, meaning Netflix now runs two separate Sonic shows at once instead of retiring the older one.

This deal does not exist in a vacuum. Netflix has spent the past few years building one of the largest video game adaptation slates in the industry, and the Sega deal slots right into that machine. Stranger Than Heaven Brings Yakuza Energy to the Small Screen

The more interesting swing is Stranger Than Heaven, based on the game from RGG Studio, the team behind the Like a Dragon and Yakuza series that has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Per IGN, the game follows a foreigner clawing his way from destitute stranger to feared yakuza to entertainment tycoon in early twentieth century Japan, and it is set to release in January 2027, with Toru Nakahara producing the film version as well. Adapting a game before it even ships is a bold move, and it puts real pressure on RGG Studio to stick the landing on the source material.

RGG Studio put the Like a Dragon series on the map with more than 30 million copies sold, turning a niche Yakuza brawler into one of Sega's flagship franchises. Producer Toru Nakahara is stacking his own resume across nearly all three of these projects, having also shaped the modern Sonic movie franchise before moving into these new deals, which suggests Sega wants a single creative through line across wildly different genres instead of handing each property to a separate outside studio.

Reaction on X leaned curious rather than uniformly hyped. One fan called the concept potential madness if the filmmakers can capture the game's energy, while another joked about who gets cast as the on screen arrow that used to guide players to their next fare, a nod to how thin the original game's story actually was. A Japanese fan following the Variety report said the premise fits a movie and hoped for real location shooting in San Francisco, the city the original Crazy Taxi is modeled after.
