Overwatch Turns Sombra Into A Support Hero And Overhauls Roadhog Ahead Of Season 5 At BlizzCon 2026

Overwatch Turns Sombra Into A Support Hero And Overhauls Roadhog Ahead Of Season 5 At BlizzCon 2026

Overwatch just handed two of its most polarizing heroes a total identity change, and it happened live on the BlizzCon 2026 stage. During the September 13 opening ceremony, Blizzard confirmed that Sombra is moving out of the Damage role entirely and into Support, while Roadhog is getting a defensive overhaul built around a brand new ability. Both changes land with Season 5, alongside a new hero, a new map, and the ending of the year long Reign of Talon story. This is not a subtle number tweak either, Blizzard rebuilt entire ability kits from the ground up for both heroes, which is the kind of change that usually only happens once or twice a year across the whole roster. For a hero pool that has heard the same complaints about Sombra and Roadhog for years, this is the biggest swing Blizzard has taken at either character since launch.

The Kit Changes, Hero By Hero

Sombra is getting the more dramatic makeover of the two. Her Hack ability is gone, replaced by Hotfix, a tool that lets her freely hack health packs and enemy deployables while also healing allies. Virus has been swapped out for Cyberspace, a projectile that heals teammates and weakens enemies at the same time, and nearly every Perk on her kit has been rebuilt around a support playstyle according to GameSpot's breakdown of the patch. The one holdover is CTRL ALT ESC, her signature escape tool, which stays intact so she keeps some of the stealth identity longtime players built their whole strategy around.

Roadhog's changes are smaller but still meaningful. Blizzard is removing the Alt Fire on his Scrap Gun and handing him Trash Compactor instead, an ability that lets him absorb incoming enemy projectiles and turn them into an explosive ball of scrap he can throw back. It is a defensive tool built to keep him fighting alongside his team instead of wandering off to hook stragglers in a corner, which has been the single biggest complaint about Roadhog since Overwatch 2 launched. Whether one new ability is enough to change how people actually play him is the real question nobody can answer until Season 5 goes live.

Season 5 Brings A New Villain And A New Map

The reworks are not landing in a vacuum. Blizzard used the same opening ceremony to reveal Doctrine, hero 54, a vampire inspired Support character tied to Doomfist who is already playable through a limited time Hero Trial. Doctrine officially joins the roster in Season 5, which also closes out the Reign of Talon storyline that has run through all of 2026 and drops a new Escort map called Watchpoint Grimsvotn, an Icelandic volcano prison where Doomfist breaks Doctrine out, according to Blizzard's own BlizzCon recap. That is a lot to ship in one season, and it puts the Sombra and Roadhog reworks in the middle of one of the busiest content drops Overwatch has had all year.

Blizzard also tacked on a handful of BlizzCon extras around the reworks, including a Mythic Gift voucher for players who log in and finish a match after the ceremony, plus the final stretch of the Overwatch World Cup with eight teams left standing. The studio lined up performances from LE SSERAFIM and YOASOBI as part of the weekend, and confirmed Overwatch Spotlight returns in February 2027, where the team plans to lay out its roadmap for the following year. None of that changes the core story here though. The headline out of BlizzCon for competitive and casual players alike is that two heroes people have argued about for years are finally getting touched, and Blizzard chose to do it with a full role swap rather than a handful of number tweaks.

Fans Are Not All On Board

Reaction on social media split hard within hours of the reveal. Some players welcomed the change, with one fan noting the new kit finally lets Sombra fit into a support role that suits her identity better than her old damage kit ever did. Other reactions were far less forgiving, with one frustrated player accusing Blizzard of butchering her entire character and playstyle in favor of what they called more generic healer content. Roadhog's changes barely registered by comparison, with at least one fan pointing out that Sombra's rework was generating far more discussion than Roadhog or the new hero Doctrine combined. That kind of split is common whenever Blizzard reworks a hero this drastically, and Overwatch's community has a long history of turning hard against changes in the first week before some players come around once they actually learn the new kit.

    The CriticalPixel Take

Reworking Sombra into Support is a bold call, and bold is exactly what that character needed after years of balance patches that never really fixed why she frustrated both her own players and everyone facing her. Turning a stealth assassin into a healer is a real gamble, but Overwatch has pulled off role swaps before, most notably when Mercy's ultimate got reworked years ago and forced an entire generation of support players to relearn her from scratch, and that eventually settled into one of the most stable kits in the game. Giving Sombra the freedom to hack health packs is at least a creative use of her old identity instead of a total erasure. Roadhog is the more disappointing half of this update. Trash Compactor is a fine addition, but handing him one new ability while leaving the rest of his kit alone feels like a half measure dressed up as a full rework.

Season 5 does not have a confirmed release date yet, so exact timing on when these changes go live is still up in the air. What is clear is that Overwatch just walked into its busiest stretch of content in years, and the Sombra change alone is going to dominate hero balance conversations long after BlizzCon wraps up.
