PS Plus Extra and Premium October Adds Mafia: The Old Country, Horizon Forbidden West and Day One Mycopunk
By CriticalPixel ·
Sony just revealed the October PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, and it is a better month than the usual filler. Mafia: The Old Country, Horizon Forbidden West and Mycopunk lead the Extra and Premium tiers, with the lineup going live on October 20 unless a game says otherwise. Premium subscribers also get Dino Crisis 2 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition on top. The announcement went up on the PlayStation Blog on October 14, and it comes packed with game trials, horror themed bonus packs and one very odd Until Dawn discount.
What lands on October 20 and what waits a week
The catalog side is seven games for Extra and Premium members. Mafia: The Old Country arrives on PS5, Horizon Forbidden West comes in on PS5 and PS4 as a PlayStation Plus re-release, and Mycopunk joins the catalog on day one, October 20 worldwide, on PS5. The Midnight Walk, the clay built dark fantasy adventure that also plays in VR on PS VR2, is already out: October 14 in the US and UK and October 15 in Japan. Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2, Tales of Arise Beyond the Dawn Edition and Monster Energy Supercross 25 all show up a week later, on October 27 in the US, the UK and Japan. That staggered schedule matters, because the headline date of October 20 does not cover three of the seven.
Mycopunk is the interesting one. It is a hyper-customizable, mission based looter shooter with four player co-op, hundreds of hand-crafted upgrades and a squad of robot rejects hired by the SAXON corporation to clear a fungal mess off a planet. Dropping a co-op game into the catalog on its release day is the sort of move that makes a subscription feel like it earns its fee, and it gives a small shooter a built-in player base at launch. Whether that base sticks around past the first weekend is the real question.
Premium gets two classics and a pair of trials
Premium members get Dino Crisis 2 on PS5 and PS4, plus RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition on PS5 and PS4. Two additions is a thin month for the people paying the most, and both are catalog fillers rather than headline pulls. The sweeter part of the top tier this month is the trials: Premium Game Trials for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and Mortal Shell II arrive on Tuesday, October 20. They join recent trials such as Valheim, The Sinking City 2, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando and Directive 8020. A trial is not a library, but it is a decent way to decide whether a new release deserves full price.
Horrorfest perks and the Until Dawn oddity
Sony is also running spooky season perks for all PlayStation Plus members. The World War Z Vibrant Halloween Skin Pack lands October 20 with five weapon skins and Halloween themed cosmetics. Back 4 Blood gets its first DLC pack, Tunnels of Terror Expansion 1, for free from October 21 until November 4, and the second and third DLC packs plus the Annual Pass drop to 95% off for the same window. Dead by Daylight players have from October 20 to October 26 to hit 10 million matches as a community, and success unlocks a Plus exclusive pack with a Buccaneer Buds Charm featuring Survivor Jeff Johansen and his rescue dog in matching pirate costumes.
Then there is the Until Dawn movie discount on the Sony Pictures Core app, available October 28 for a limited time and ending November 3. That one needs a PlayStation 4 or 5 console, a Sony Pictures Core account and an 18+ age check. A movie discount in a games subscription post is a strange flex, and a reminder that Sony wants Plus to feel like a lifestyle bundle.
What the critics said about the headliners
IGN covered the lineup and called Mafia: The Old Country a solid, linear, narrative-driven prequel, reminding readers that it gave the game an 8/10 in 2025 for its writing, world and performances. The outlet also points out that the game recently got an expansion with more story content for anyone who wants extra time in Sicily. Horizon Forbidden West is described as the sequel to Guerrilla's open-world action RPG, and IGN notes it scored a 9/10 at release. Those are the two easiest recommendations in the batch, and neither one is new.
Community reaction
Reaction is limited at the time of writing. The posts I found were mostly list reposts from fan and news accounts, with the highest engagement on a Spanish language rundown and almost no strong opinions about the lineup itself. Nobody is yelling about it, which for a Plus announcement tends to mean the month is fine and nobody is delighted. I am not going to pretend there is a consensus yet.
The CriticalPixel take
This is a solid month for Extra subscribers and a mediocre one for Premium. Day one Mycopunk is the best value, Mafia: The Old Country is the best pure game, and Horizon Forbidden West is a re-release that most people who wanted it already own or have played. Three of the seven catalog games sit behind an October 27 date, and the blog only names the US, the UK and Japan for them, so check your region on release day. Sony itself warns that catalog lineups may differ by region, which is a polite way of saying your list might be shorter than the one in the headline. If you are on Essential, none of this applies to you, and that tier already had its own October lineup.
The takeaway is simple. October 20 is the date to circle for Mafia, Horizon and Mycopunk, the 27th is the second wave, and the Back 4 Blood freebie runs only until November 4. Play the games you were going to skip, trial the ones you were unsure about, and do not forget the subscription is only worth the fee if you actually use it.
