Rebel Wolves Reverses Course on Blood of Dawnwalker, Locks 60fps Day-One Patch for PS5 and Xbox

    By CriticalPixel · 2026-08-24

Rebel Wolves Reverses Course on Blood of Dawnwalker, Locks 60fps Day-One Patch for PS5 and Xbox

Rebel Wolves is doing a 180 on The Blood of Dawnwalker. Three days after telling console players the open-world action RPG would top out at 40 frames per second even on a PS5 Pro, the studio now says a 60fps Performance Mode will ship as a day-one patch on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X. The Xbox Series S is the only console left at the 30fps ceiling.

The reversal is the cleanest win for player feedback we have seen from a high-profile 2026 launch. The Polish studio, founded by ex-CD Projekt Red leads, originally framed the 40fps target as the safe choice for a 14th century dark fantasy built around precise melee combat. Players were not buying it. A wave of complaints hit X and Reddit within hours of the August 21 performance trailer, and the IGN inbox filled with refund requests from day-one buyers who said they would simply wait for a PC version.

What the new mode looks like on each console

Performance Mode on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X targets a 60fps frame rate, with the Dynamic 4K resolution kept from the other modes. The existing Balanced preset still targets 40fps and the Quality preset stays at 30fps on all three machines. Rebel Wolves did not publish a specific resolution target for the new Performance Mode, and it is worth noting the developer explicitly used the word targeting rather than guaranteeing, so launch-day analysis will need to confirm how often the game actually holds a locked 60.

The Xbox Series S is the lone outlier. It still ships without a Performance Mode option, which means the smaller Microsoft console is locked to 30fps at launch. Rebel Wolves did not address whether a Series S Performance Mode could come later, and the studio has not said what its target resolution is on Series S at all. Given how starved Series S players already feel for third-party parity, that omission is going to sting and is likely to come up in the first week of review coverage.

The original 40fps news and what changed

The dust-up traces back to the Friday Q and A Rebel Wolves ran on social media on August 22, which confirmed the launch performance targets. The breakdown it published had PS5 Pro with only Quality (30fps) and Balanced (40fps) modes. Base PS5 was the same. Xbox Series X matched both. The studio emphasized that the difference between the Pro and base PS5 came down to image quality rather than frame rate, which is what tripped the fuse with players. A 40fps cap on a Pro, in 2026, with no 60fps option anywhere on console, was always going to draw heat.

By the weekend, posts from outlets like IGN, the official @DawnwalkerGame account, and a stack of independent creators had reframed the conversation. The studio's own statement is worth reading in full. Performance Mode was already in the works, they said, but it was still being tested. They simply were not ready to promise it yet. Once player feedback made it clear how much it mattered, they finished the next round of tests and got the confidence they needed to lock Performance Mode for Day 1. Translation: it was always a target, they just did not feel they had the telemetry to commit to it on Friday. By Sunday night they did.

    How the community reacted

The response has been close to a clean sweep on the positive side. The official @DawnwalkerGame post confirming the patch has racked up more than 600 likes on X and tens of thousands of views, with the top quote-tweet reading like a victory lap. Huge W they listened so quickly. Independent creators like Synth Potato and Wesley drove the second wave with technical breakdowns, and IGN reposted the news with a frame stoker headline that has not aged well in the best possible way. The general tone across Reddit, ResetEra, and the Steam forums has been a relieved exhale, not a celebration. Players wanted parity with the PC version, and they got it for three out of four consoles.

What it means for launch on September 2

The Blood of Dawnwalker arrives on September 2, 2026, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S, priced at $59.99 standard and $69.99 for the Eclipse Edition that bundles a digital art book, soundtrack, and prequel comic. Bandai Namco is publishing, and the marketing push has leaned hard on Rebel Wolves' CD Projekt pedigree, the single-player open world, and the dual day and night cycle where protagonist Coen shifts between human and vampire. The 60fps patch keeps all of that intact. The bigger question now is what Rebel Wolves decides to do with the Series S, and whether Quality mode on the Pro sees any visual lift, since the original breakdown implied the Pro advantage was softer than most PS5 Pro buyers expected.

If you pre-ordered on console and were on the fence about switching to PC, you do not have to switch anymore. If you were waiting on the Series S to get parity, you are still waiting. The fact that a five day window was enough for Rebel Wolves to lock in a 60fps mode on the three most powerful consoles is a good sign for a studio that has been promising hands-on transparency since the game was revealed. We will see on launch day whether the actual frame rate holds and whether the team has the bandwidth to do something about the Series S before the second patch.
