Shrek 2 Remastered Leaks on the Microsoft Store Days Before the ID@Xbox Showcase, With 4K and Four-Player Co-Op
By CriticalPixel ·
Somebody pushed a Microsoft Store page live too early, and now the worst-kept secret of tomorrow's ID@Xbox Showcase is a 2004 licensed platformer about an ogre, a donkey and a cat in boots. Shrek 2 Remastered appeared on the Microsoft Store on October 16 with a developer, a feature list and zero announcement, then got pulled, and outlets like Dexerto and NAG flagged it before IGN dropped its own showcase teaser on October 19. The showcase kicks off Tuesday, October 20 at 10am PT, and Shrek reportedly shows up in the teaser trailer. None of this is confirmed by Xbox, Aspyr or anyone who would be allowed to confirm it, so treat it as a leak. It is also about as clean a leak as you will see, with specifics that a placeholder page rarely carries.
What the Microsoft Store Page Showed
According to Dexerto, the store page for Shrek 2 Remastered went live on October 16, was first spotted by Gematsu, and has since been taken down. It lists Aspyr as the developer, the studio behind several recent remasters of classic games. The original Shrek 2 game came from Activision in 2004 as a tie-in to the movie, and let you team up as characters like Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots. The listing says the remaster supports "up to four-player couch cooperative play, online or mixed," which means you can fill the couch with friends, stack in online players, or do both at once. The game has also been rebuilt with improved textures, an updated UI, 4K resolution and enhanced cutscenes, and the page advertises a new Photo Mode and Cheat Mode on top. You can still swap between heroes at any time while you fight enemies, take on bosses and solve puzzles on the way from Shrek's swamp to Far Far Away.
What the page did not show is just as telling: no price and no release date. That is the part that matters if you are deciding whether to care, because a four-player 4K remaster at a sensible price is an easy yes, and the same package at a greedy one is a skip. NAG says the unannounced game is reportedly being developed by Aspyr and that Shrek has already appeared in the showcase teaser, which is why its post joked that somebody peeled back too many onion layers. Dexerto adds that a Shrek 2 game was among the titles in a big Steam achievements leak back in September, so this is not the first time the remaster has surfaced. Two separate leaks pointing at the same game, plus the teaser appearance, is a pretty strong paper trail.
Why Tomorrow's Showcase Is the Likely Reveal Slot
IGN says the October edition of the ID@Xbox Showcase, presented with Xbox, starts on October 20 at 10am PT, 1pm ET and 6pm BST, and streams across IGN.com, YouTube, Facebook, X, Twitch, Eurogamer, VG247 and Rock Paper Shotgun. IGN's original announcement on October 13 promised trailers, gameplay and world premieres from 18 games. IGN's own tweet today says exclusive reveals and updates on 20 games, so either the lineup grew by two in a week or somebody rounded up generously. Either way, a world premiere slot is where a surprise remaster usually lands, and Dexerto reaches the same conclusion: an official reveal most likely comes at this show, since Shrek briefly appears in the event's teaser trailer.
The ID@Xbox shows have a habit of mixing small-studio originals with a few nostalgia plays, and the last one set the template. IGN's rundown of April's showcase lists There Are No Ghosts at the Grand, Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School, Solo Leveling Arise Overdrive and Tears of Metal among its reveals. A Shrek 2 remaster from a studio that specializes in dusting off old games fits that mix without any stretching. A game that sells on name recognition is also cheap to market, which is the kind of reveal a showcase like this loves. That is a take, not a report, but the pattern is hard to miss.
The Other Confirmed Headliner Is Already Dated
IGN confirms two things for the show so far: The Wolf Among Us Remastered and gameplay from Critical Reflex Games, with the rest left under wraps. The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a Telltale Games release, and IGN's game page lists an initial release of October 29, 2026 for PS5, Xbox and PC. The reveal trailer arrived on June 5 with a holiday 2026 window, the release date trailer followed on August 26, and a Remastering a Legend featurette promises improved lighting, updated animation and refined environments. Showing up at the ID@Xbox Showcase nine days before launch is a victory lap, not a surprise, and it tells you the show is as much a marketing slot for dated games as it is a reveal stage for new ones.
How the Community Is Taking It
Reaction is limited so far, and I am not going to invent a consensus from a couple of posts. The one outlet joke I read, NAG's onion layers line, treats the leak as funny rather than infuriating, which is about what you would expect for a remaster of a game people remember fondly from a couch in 2004. What I did not find is a large independent crowd weighing in on whether the leak is accurate, whether the price will hold up, or whether Aspyr is the right team for the job. That silence is normal for a store page that lived for a couple of days before being deleted. Expect the real reaction to arrive after the stream, when there is a trailer to argue about.
The CriticalPixel Take
Four-player couch co-op with online mixed in is the right call, and it is rarer than it should be in 2026. Plenty of publishers treat local multiplayer like a museum piece, so a remaster that leads its store page with it deserves some credit before it has earned any. The sloppy part is the leak itself: a live store listing with no announcement behind it is the kind of mistake that keeps happening because it rarely costs anyone anything, and it still steps on reveals that a marketing team planned for months. The real test is the missing price. If this lands at a modest number with the full feature list intact, it is an easy recommendation for anyone with friends and a couch. If it shows up as a premium-priced cash-in on a movie license, the 4K polish will not save it.
Tomorrow at 10am PT, watch for four things: whether Shrek 2 Remastered actually gets its reveal, what it costs, which platforms it targets and when it ships. Also keep an eye on the Wolf Among Us Remastered footage, since the game is nine days from launch, and on what Critical Reflex Games has to show. Until the stream starts, everything about Shrek 2 Remastered is a leak and nothing more. If the reveal matches the store page, the lesson is simple: the listing was telling the truth, and it just got there a few days early.
