Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Year 2 Brings Godzilla, Evangelion and Bayonetta, Plus a $39.99 Base Game Price

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Year 2 Brings Godzilla, Evangelion and Bayonetta, Plus a $39.99 Base Game Price

Sega used the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds World Championship Finals to lay out the whole Year 2 plan for its kart racer, and it is a loud one. Godzilla gets his own course, Evangelion brings Asuka and Rei, Bayonetta joins the roster for free, and the base game drops to a permanent $39.99 USD. The paid half is a $29.99 Season Pass, with Year 2 content starting November 3 according to Wario64's rundown. On top of that, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Persona crossovers are already penciled in for late next year. That is a lot of Sega flexing the licensing cabinet in a single evening, so it is worth separating what you get for free from what you pay for.

    What Year 2 actually contains

Shacknews played an early PC build at Sega's North American HQ in Burbank and came back with the clearest breakdown so far. Year 2 adds six new tracks that combine into two new Grand Prix circuits. The headline course is Godzilla Escape, which sends you through the City Escape layout from Sonic Adventure 2 while Godzilla tears the place apart. The second is Tokyo-III, the other half of the Evangelion collaboration, where the final lap carves the city up and forces new routes. Each crossover gets its own vehicles too, with Godzilla, King Ghidorah and Mothra machines on one side and Asuka and Rei as the new racers on the Evangelion side.

Further out, the calendar gets more interesting. A Sanrio crossover arrives next spring with a course called Virtual Sanrio Puroland, and a Segaland pack follows in the same window. Segaland is an arcade dimension stuffed with old-school Sega titles, plus new vehicles shaped like the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast and arcade cabinets themed on Outrun and Virtua Fighter. The late-year crossovers are the vague part. Wario64 posted that Final Fantasy VII Remake series and Persona DLC is slated for a September to December 2027 window, and Shacknews calls the exact contents unspecified for now.

What is free and what costs money

The free list is better than most live-service kart games manage. Duel Mode adds 1v1 racing online and offline, with items retuned for two-player races and Duel Boosts to keep gaps from snowballing, and it is the main way to unlock Bayonetta along with her Butterfly Witch vehicle. A McLaren racer, a Sonic McLaren team outfit, and Persona 3's Aigis with the Paladian Dressy are free as well. The Godzilla and Evangelion content sits inside the $29.99 Year 2 Season Pass, along with the Sanrio and Segaland packs due next spring. Owners of both the Year 1 and Year 2 passes get Super Shadow as a bonus character, and newcomers get a permanent base price drop to $39.99 USD.

    Where the game stands today

CrossWorlds launched on September 25, 2025 on PC, developed by Sonic Team with SEGA publishing, according to its Steam page. SEGA's official site lists PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and Epic Games as supported platforms, and notes that the Season Pass and all collaboration DLC are sold separately. That last line matters, because the whole plan leans on collaborations, and the site's news feed already shows the live cadence, from a Hatsune Miku festival to an Avatar Legends pack landing October 14.

How the community is taking it

Reaction on X is split, and the sample is small, so treat it as a mood rather than a verdict. Under Wario64's post, one reply called Godzilla and Evangelion on the same racetrack peak Sega crossover energy and said 30 dollars for that roster is not bad at all. Another complained that two packs in the pass come with no new characters at the same price, and a third shrugged that the lack of Pochacco was the biggest loss of the day. Under the Final Fantasy VII post, the jokes were about a Smash Bros style kart racer and comparisons to how often Mario Kart World gets new content. Even the grumbling reads like people who are paying attention, which is more than most DLC rollouts earn.

    The CriticalPixel take

Sega is doing the thing publishers keep promising and rarely deliver: a roadmap you can read in one sitting, with a visible split between free and paid. Bayonetta, McLaren and Aigis costing nothing is good faith. The part that deserves side-eye is the pass structure. Sanrio and Segaland do not arrive until spring, so November buyers are prepaying for months of waiting, and the Final Fantasy VII and Persona crossovers have only a vague 2027 window and no contents to judge. Super Shadow going only to people who own both Year 1 and Year 2 passes is also a small loyalty tax on anyone who skipped one. Thirty dollars for Godzilla, Evangelion, Sanrio and Segaland looks fair on a spreadsheet. Whether it feels fair depends on how many of those packs you actually care about.

Year 2 starts November 3, and the first real test is whether Godzilla Escape and Tokyo-III feel as good on a controller as they sound in a press preview. Shacknews played an early PC build, so how the Switch versions hold up with all this content is still an open question. Keep an eye on Sega for exact dates and pricing on the Final Fantasy VII and Persona packs, because those are the ones that will decide whether this pass is a bargain or a leap of faith.
