Sony Brings Back Transparent PS5 Controllers With the Prism Collection at $84.99, Out February 4
By CriticalPixel ·
Sony just brought back the one thing PlayStation fans have begged for since the PS2 era. On October 28, 2026, PlayStation announced the Prism Collection, a trio of see-through DualSense controllers and matching PS5 console covers in Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray. The controllers cost $84.99 each, the covers cost $74.99, pre-orders open November 10, and everything starts shipping February 4, 2027. The reveal came through the official PlayStation Blog, with the pitch that players can finally take a closer look at the hardware behind the plastic. It is a nostalgia play, and a good looking one, but the price tag deserves a hard look before anyone gets carried away.
What Sony Is Actually Selling
The Prism Collection covers two product types. First are the DualSense wireless controllers in three colors: a vibrant Flare Orange, a deep Emerald Green and a cool Graphite Gray. Second are PS5 console covers in the same three colors. Sony says the controllers carry a high-gloss clear finish across the back, which shows off the tech that powers the pad, plus a metallic finish on the middle cover that ties the transparent shell to the rest of the PS5 look. Designer Satoshi Aoyagi said the orange picks up a rosy hue where the transparent material overlaps, while the green gains depth through its transparency. That is a lot of design talk for a plastic shell, but the photos in the announcement back it up.
Prices, Dates and Where You Can Buy
Here are the numbers, straight from Sony. The DualSense controllers carry a recommended retail price of $84.99 in the US, 84.99 euros in Europe and 74.99 pounds in the UK, with a Japanese price of 12,480 yen including tax. The console covers run $74.99, 74.99 euros, 64.99 pounds and 9,980 yen including tax. Pre-orders begin November 10, 2026 at 10am local time, which works out to 7am Pacific and 10am Eastern for US buyers going through direct.playstation.com. The launch starts February 4, 2027, though Sony warns that the exact date and availability can vary by country or region. GameRant's rundown of the reveal lines up with those figures.
The buying rules matter more than usual here. Sony says the console covers will be sold exclusively through PlayStation Direct where it operates, which covers the US, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Everywhere else, covers show up in limited quantities through select retailers. That limited wording is a polite way of warning that supply could get tight if demand spikes. Anyone who wants a matching set should be at the pre-order page the moment it opens, because a wait-and-see approach with a limited-quantity product tends to end badly. The controllers themselves are listed as available globally, so they should be the easier half of the set to find.
Why Transparent Plastic Still Works
The inspiration is no secret. Leo Cardoso, from Sony's Color, Material and Finish design team, said fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers, and that the team wanted to bring back the see-through trend of the late 90s in a fresh, modern way. Anyone who grew up with translucent shells on their consoles and handhelds knows why the look stuck around. Seeing the guts of a machine feels honest in a way matte black rarely does. PS5 hardware has leaned hard on white panels and slick two-tone finishes, so a run of clear shells is a welcome change of pace for the platform.
Timing is smart too. GameRant notes that Sony has Until Dawn 2 landing January 28 and God of War: Laufey on February 16, which puts the Prism Collection between two big first-party releases. A fresh colorway is cheap marketing for a console that is years into its life, and it gives owners a reason to spend more without a hardware price hike. Whether that spending is wise is another question. A controller and a cover together land at $159.98 before tax, which is a lot of cash for plastic, however pretty.
How the Community Is Reacting
Reaction so far is limited, and the few replies I read lean excited with one loud complaint. Early posts on X from accounts like Complex Pop and TCMFGames ran with the news, and a handful of users replied that they want all three colors. The sore spot is the DualSense Edge. TCMFGames asked Sony for a transparent black Edge, and another user replied that the clear black Edge is the obvious miss because the standard pad gets three clear shells at $84.99 while the pro controller gets nothing. With only a few voices to go on, I would not call that a consensus, but the Edge gripe is the one I expect to grow once pre-orders open.
The CriticalPixel Take
I like this. Clear plastic is a cheap way to make hardware feel special, and Sony picked colors that look good rather than safe. What I do not like is the money. Paying $84.99 for a colorway controller is an accessory price that has quietly become normal, and $74.99 for a cover is steep for a molded shell that does nothing except look good. Sony selling the covers directly where it can also means the company, not a retailer, keeps that sale, and the limited retailer supply keeps the cover scarce. If you only want one piece, buy the controller and skip the cover, since the controller is the part you will actually hold every day. Fans who wanted a transparent Edge are right to grumble, because the people who spend the most on PlayStation accessories got left out of the nostalgia party.
Mark November 10 on the calendar if you want a set, and keep your payment details ready, because the covers are the limited-quantity part. The Prism Collection will not change what the PS5 can do, but it will change how a lot of living rooms look in February. Sony's announcement does not mention an Edge version, so for now the pro crowd waits.
