Switch 2 Hits an All-Time Low of £354.99 in the UK Weeks After Nintendo Raised the Price to £419.99

Switch 2 Hits an All-Time Low of £354.99 in the UK Weeks After Nintendo Raised the Price to £419.99

Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price in the UK on September 1, and less than a month later the console is cheaper than it was before the hike. Both Smyths and Argos are selling it for £354.99, according to IGN's deals desk, against the new £419.99 recommended retail price. That is a £65 saving, and it undercuts the old £395.99 price by £41. IGN calls it the lowest price the console has ever hit in the UK, and the IGN UK Deals account flagged the same drop across several retailers on September 24. A price rise followed by a record low inside four weeks is the kind of whiplash that makes list prices feel like suggestions.

The numbers behind the £354.99 Switch 2 deal

Here is the math. The rise took the console from £395.99 to £419.99, a £24 bump that Nintendo confirmed in August alongside similar increases in the US, Canada and Europe. The US price went up $50 to $499.99, Canada climbed $50 to $679.99, and the Euro zone moved to €499.99, up €30. Japan had already taken its increase. At £354.99 a UK buyer now pays £41 less than they would have before the hike. IGN describes the offer as a limited time sale, and I could not load either retailer page myself to confirm stock or an end date, so treat the deadline as unknown and check the listings before you count on it.

Nintendo is already stacking holiday bundles

Nintendo's own UK news page lays out the holiday plan. A Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle arrives October 22, while a Mario Kart World bundle and The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition console both land October 29. Each game bundle includes a full game download and a three month Nintendo Switch Online membership code. Nintendo did not list bundle prices on that page, so any claim about how the sets compare to the discounted standalone console is guesswork until store listings go up. What the page does show is that Nintendo expects people to buy hardware this autumn, and it is not waiting for the price rise to settle before pushing sets.

    Is this a stock clear-out?

IGN flags that the following is speculative and unconfirmed: the drop could be retailers clearing stock to make room for the replaceable battery version of the console that is confirmed for Europe this autumn. Nintendo's bundle page backs up the hardware angle in a small way, since a footnote says the consoles in those sets will not contain a user-replaceable battery and points to upcoming battery-related revisions to selected products. It is a reasonable theory. Retailers rarely take a fresh £65 cut on a console that had a price rise 23 days earlier unless something is pushing them, and a hardware revision is a classic push. But IGN labels it unconfirmed, and I found no statement from Nintendo or the retailers backing it, so it stays a theory.

What buyers and the community are saying

Reaction is limited so far, so there is no consensus to report. The one comment I found under the deal post called it a good tactic from Nintendo, really pushing Zelda and taking the fight to GTA. That is one person, not a trend, and it reads more like a take on Nintendo's strategy than proof of it. IGN's own pitch leans hard on the game library, citing the 10/10 review for Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake. It also argues that buying into PS5 or Xbox right now is stupidly expensive by comparison, which is an opinion, but not a hard one to sympathize with.

    The CriticalPixel take

A price hike is supposed to mean the new number sticks, and inside a month a UK shopper can beat the pre-hike price by £41. That does not make the increase fake. Nintendo sets the recommended price, retailers set the sticker, and we do not know who is funding this discount, whether it is retailer margin, a supplier arrangement or something Nintendo has not disclosed. It does make the September 1 increase look awkward, and it hands shoppers leverage they did not have last week. If you were waiting for a reason to buy before the Zelda and Mario Kart sets arrive, £354.99 is the number to beat, and the limited time tag is the only pressure you should feel.

Do not read this as a permanent reset. Sales like this come and go, and the standalone price could move again once the battery revision and the holiday bundles hit shelves. For now UK buyers get the cheapest Switch 2 on record, and Nintendo gets a reminder that its list price is where the bargaining starts, not where it ends. If you already own one, this is mostly a headline. If you have been holding out since the price increase was announced, this is the first real opening the UK market has given you, and it arrived before most of the year's big releases have even shipped. Watch the retailer listings over the next few weeks, because that is where you will find out whether £354.99 was a weekend blip or the new floor.
