Thief Remastered Ships With a New Four Mission Campaign Built by the Black Parade Modders

Thief Remastered Ships With a New Four Mission Campaign Built by the Black Parade Modders

Garrett is coming back on December 3, and Nightdive is not treating the return as a texture pack. Thief: The Dark Project Remastered ships with The Tarnished Mirror, a brand new four mission campaign built by the team behind The Black Parade, the 2023 fan mod that plenty of us still call the best Thief content in twenty years. PC Gamer broke the news alongside the reveal trailer, and the details are the good kind of strange: four new missions, bigger maps than 1998 hardware could ever hold, and a studio willing to hand a remaster's story content to the people who have been keeping the series alive for free.

A Four Mission Campaign From the Modders Who Never Left

The Tarnished Mirror picks up after the Trickster's defeat. Garrett is shortchanged, back on small time jobs, and The City is tearing itself apart politically while he lifts a Precursor hand mirror that turns out to be the thread on a much nastier conspiracy. The official Steam listing says the campaign is included with the remaster rather than sold as a separate add on, and that it runs four missions using the same light and sound stealth rules as the original. The press release frames it as a bridge between The Dark Project and The Metal Age, which means it has to land tonally between a haunted cathedral and a mechanist factory. That is a narrow lane, and The Black Parade already proved this team can drive in it.

Content wise this is a fat package. The remaster runs on Nightdive's KEX Engine and packs the twelve missions of The Dark Project plus the three extra missions and five enemy types from Thief Gold, then adds the four Tarnished Mirror missions on top. That is nineteen missions, which for a 1998 stealth game is an unreasonable amount of crouching in shadows. There is a mission selector for replaying anything you have finished, a weapon wheel, 120 frames per second support, modern controller options, and official support for custom campaigns. That last one matters. Nightdive is selling a remaster that openly invites the mod scene in instead of pretending it does not exist.

December 3, Every Platform You Own, and a Very Expensive Box

The release date is December 3 and the platform list is absurd in the best way: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S with Play Anywhere, Nintendo Switch 2, PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, plus PlayStation 4 and the original Switch. Switch owners get a free upgrade to the Switch 2 edition. Atari's reveal trailer confirms digital pre-orders are live now and that the console physical editions come in Standard, Steelbook and Trapezoid versions.

Prices are where it gets spicy. The standard digital edition is $29.99 and the Deluxe digital edition is $34.99, which adds an art book, the official soundtrack and an excerpt from an upcoming Thief novelization. Physical is console only: $29.99 for the standard box, $39.99 for the Steelbook with a printed manual, and $69.99 for the Deluxe Trapezoid Edition that recreates the 1998 big box packaging with a Remaster Diary inside. If you are on PC and wanted that trapezoid on your shelf, tough luck, because Nightdive is not making one. Nightdive also confirmed the pre-order push on its own account, and the Steam page is running a 20 percent loyalty discount that ends December 10.

The Replies Are Doing the Marketing for Free

Community reaction in the hours after the trailer landed was almost entirely positive, which is rare enough to note. Replies under PC Gamer's post called the Black Parade team getting official work a good outcome and said modders turning pro never gets old. Quote posts from smaller accounts hammered the same two notes: fan work going official is the feel good story of the week, and $29.99 for a remaster with a brand new campaign is an easy sell. One player called The Black Parade the best Thief they had ever played and said the announcement was genuinely exciting. I did not find a serious backlash thread in the first few hours, only the usual grumbling about the big box being console only. This is a small sample from a niche fanbase, so treat it as early mood rather than a verdict.

    The CriticalPixel Take

Nightdive has quietly built the most sensible remaster pipeline in the business, and hiring the Black Parade crew is the logical endpoint of it. Most publishers would have scraped the mod, sent a cease and desist, or bolted a generic horde mode onto a 28 year old stealth game and called it new content. Instead the studio looked at the most ambitious fan campaign the series ever got and paid those people to make an official one. That deserves the goodwill it is getting. The $69.99 trapezoid is steep for cardboard and a diary, and the PC snub on the big box is a genuine own goal for a fanbase that started on mouse and keyboard, but those are collector problems, not game problems.

The open question is whether four missions can carry the weight of being the first new Thief campaign in decades. The Black Parade was built over years by people who were not on a publisher schedule, and shipping under a deadline with Atari watching is a different job. Still, the pitch is honest: nineteen missions, the full Gold content, custom campaign support, and a new story that tries to bridge the two games that defined stealth. December 3 is close, the pre-order discount runs to December 10, and stealth fans who have been starving since 2004 finally have something to argue about again.
