Twitch CEO Dan Clancy Says GTA 6 Online Multiplayer Won't Launch Until 2027, a Year After Story Mode

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy Says GTA 6 Online Multiplayer Won't Launch Until 2027, a Year After Story Mode

Grand Theft Auto VI is not even out yet and Rockstar is already staring down a second launch window that might matter just as much as the first one. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg this week that the multiplayer side of the game, widely expected to be a successor to GTA Online, is on track for 2027, a full year after the single player campaign ships in November. Clancy did not hedge much either. He framed it as the bigger of two traffic spikes coming for his own platform, which tells you how much weight Twitch is putting on a game Rockstar has barely discussed in public.

    What Clancy Actually Told Bloomberg

According to Clancy, Twitch has spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about its plans and about how the developer can get streamers engaged once the multiplayer mode arrives. His exact line, picked up by outlets like GameSpot within the hour, was that fans should expect a big bump when GTA 6 launches in November, then an even bigger one next year when Rockstar launches the multiplayer piece. That is a specific enough claim that it reads less like a guess and more like someone who has actually sat in planning meetings, even if he stopped short of naming a month or confirming a title for the mode.

Rockstar Still Has Not Said a Word

That is the part worth repeating. Rockstar has never called Grand Theft Auto VI a single player experience with an asterisk, and it has not confirmed any online component, a name for a sequel to GTA Online, or a release window for one. Everything about GTA Online 2, or whatever it ends up being called, is still coming from people adjacent to Rockstar rather than Rockstar itself. IGN picked up the same Bloomberg comments and noted that speculation is already splitting between early 2027, the middle of the year, and a holiday launch, with nobody able to point to anything official. Given how tight Rockstar keeps its own announcements, a Twitch executive is currently the closest thing fans have to a timeline.

GTA Online Set the Bar, So the Wait Is Not New

None of this is unprecedented for the series. GTA Online did not launch alongside Grand Theft Auto V in 2013 either. It arrived a few weeks later, buggy and rough, and still went on to print money for Rockstar and Take-Two for over a decade. What Clancy is describing this time is a much longer runway, closer to twelve months than a few weeks, which suggests Rockstar wants the online side polished and economically tuned against a finished game rather than rushed out to ride launch week hype. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has previously pointed to Take-Two's own NBA 2K Online titles in China as a model where an older online game keeps running alongside a newer one instead of being replaced outright, which hints that current GTA Online players might not be forced to migrate the moment a sequel shows up.

Fans Are Not Convinced This Is News

Reaction under the story split fast, and not always in Rockstar's favor. Some players pushed back on Clancy speaking about GTA 6 like a Rockstar spokesperson instead of letting the developer set its own schedule, with one reply on Dexerto's post asking directly why a streaming executive gets to farm engagement off someone else's unannounced game. Others were openly skeptical that Clancy even knows the real date, tossing out lines like who believes an old man's guesswork and treating the whole thing as obvious filler since everyone already assumes GTA 6 multiplayer is inevitable. A smaller group took it as good news, floating early 2027 as their preferred window so they can finish the story campaign first. With this few data points, call the mood mixed leaning skeptical rather than settled.

    The CriticalPixel Take

Treat this the way you should treat any release date that comes from someone who is not the publisher. Clancy has a real reason to know things, since Twitch's own revenue is tied to how many people watch GTA 6 content, but he also has a real incentive to hype up a bigger event a year from now to keep advertisers and creators locked into his platform through 2027. Rockstar has earned the benefit of the doubt on execution after years of GTA Online, yet the studio has also trained fans to expect long silences followed by sudden confirmation, which is exactly what is happening again here. Nothing about this changes what launches in November. It just tells you Rockstar is already thinking past day one, and that Twitch wants everyone to know it will be there when the second wave hits.

    What Comes Next

For now, the only confirmed date on the calendar is November 19, when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, with a PC version still unannounced. Everything about a 2027 online mode remains secondhand until Rockstar or Take-Two says otherwise, so treat Clancy's comments as a strong signal rather than a locked release date. Expect Rockstar to stay quiet on the multiplayer side through launch week and well into next year, right up until the moment it decides the timing works in its favor.
