Xbox Mythic Achievements Leak: A Platinum Trophy Rival for 100 Percent Completions, With No Gamerscore

Xbox has spent two decades telling players that a full achievement list is its own reward, while PlayStation has spent most of that time handing out a shiny Platinum Trophy for the same grind. That gap is about to close. Mythic Achievements surfaced in an update to the Xbox PC app on September 23, and according to The Verge they unlock once a player completes every achievement in a game, complete with a unique unlock sound and a place on your profile. Microsoft has not announced anything officially, so treat every detail here as a leak until Xbox says otherwise. Still, the trail of evidence is long enough that this looks like a question of when, not if.

    What Mythic Achievements actually do

Per The Verge, a Mythic Achievement pops on screen with its own sound, can be tracked through the Xbox dashboard, and adds to a Mythic count you can show off on your profile. Polygon, citing a TrueAchievements report, fills in the rules. You earn one after unlocking all of a game's base achievements, and anything added later through DLC or patches will not touch that progress. Mythics carry no Gamerscore, so this is a pure status badge and not another number to farm. After you unlock one, the game art in the Gaming tab wears the Mythic logo and a green border, and a separate filter shows what you still need. The best detail is that Mythics will reportedly be awarded retroactively once the update goes live, which means your shelf of finished games lights up on day one. Keeping DLC out of the equation is also the sane call, because a Platinum-style prize that a surprise expansion can yank away from you is a trap.

    How this got out

The first crack showed up on September 19. Polygon reported that an Xbox Insider in the Alpha Skip-Ahead tier opened the Filters option on their achievements page and found a Game Completion filter reading Completed or Incomplete Mythic Achievement. Turning it on showed only the games they had fully completed. Polygon could not find the filter on its own Xbox Series X and said Xbox had made no announcement or blog post about it. Four days later the logo and sound cue turned up in the Xbox PC app, and the TrueAchievements report says the update could land before the end of the month. The Verge adds that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma revealed last month that a Platinum Trophy equivalent was coming later this year, so the leak matches a promise Xbox already made.

This also did not come out of nowhere. On April 8, Xbox Wire announced that select Insiders could test a refreshed achievement notification look, the option to hide games from your achievement list, and a highlight for titles where you have earned all available Gamerscore, plus new filters to find them. Xbox called it a small but meaningful step in a broader set of improvements, and said it was continuing to explore new ways to recognize completion and milestone moments over time. Mythic Achievements read like the next step in that plan. The infrastructure for spotting a 100 percent game was already in testing five months ago, and now it is getting a name, a sound, and a badge.

    The timing is awkward

The Verge points out that Mythic Achievements started appearing in the Xbox PC app on the same day Microsoft announced it was laying off 268 Xbox staffers, likely closing Ninja Theory, and moving Halo, Sea of Thieves, and Age of Empires over to Activision. That is a brutal news cycle to hide a feel-good feature inside, and nobody should pretend a completion badge makes up for a studio going dark. But both things can be true. Xbox has looked like a platform in retreat for months, and small wins that make players feel the ecosystem still cares about them are worth something. A Platinum equivalent should have shown up years ago, so no confetti for arriving this late, but a good idea delivered late is still a good idea.

    What players are saying

Reaction is limited so far, and what exists leans positive. Tom Warren's post announcing the feature had pulled 388 reposts and 106 replies by the time I read it, but the replies I could read were a small sample. One person asked whether Xbox 360 games will get Mythics, since the 360 is where achievements started and plenty of people banked full 1000G games back then. Another called the unlock sound the most beautiful thing that has ever come out of an Xbox. I would not call that a consensus, and the 360 question is fair, because nothing I read confirms which generations of games will count.

    The CriticalPixel take

Good idea, overdue, and mostly well designed on paper. Base achievements only, no Gamerscore inflation, retroactive credit, and a filter to chase what is missing are the right choices. The open questions are the ones that decide whether it feels good in practice. What happens to games with delisted content or broken online achievements, whether older Xbox titles count, and whether the badge shows up cleanly on both console and PC are all unanswered. Xbox also has a habit of announcing a feature and then leaving it half finished, so the real test is the launch build, not the leak.

Until Xbox posts an official announcement, everything above stays in leak territory. If the reports hold, expect Mythics live before the month is out. Go count how many of your games are one achievement from done, because your backlog is about to get a scoreboard.
